Organised car pools to get people to work. MLK arrested and fined $500. Sentenced to a year, served 2 weeks. Allowed boycott to last longer. Showed MLK’s popularity and leadership qualities – serving small part of his sentence and becoming famous. December 1956, segregation on buses made illegal. Southern Christian Leadership Conference was set up, to keep fighting for equal rights. Media attention, Rosa Parks, NAACP, MIA, taxi companies, Supreme Court. Desegregation in Education – Brown 1954 and Little Rock 1957 NAACP organised voter registration campaigns and local protests to support desegregation of schools. President Eisenhower showed his support for Civil Rights movement. Segregation in education illegal. By 1968, 58% of southern black school children still in ‘black’ schools. Backlash – Emmett Till, NAACP outlawed in Alabama and most of Louisiana. Oliver Brown, Supreme Court, President Eisenhower, NAACP

Violent reaction from some racist whites in south. Showed transport hadn’t been properly desegregated yet. President Kennedy more sympathetic to civil rights movement. CORE, SNCC, SCLC Birmingham March - 1963 Organised by SCLC and MLK. Arrested – wrote Letter from Birmingham Jail, said they could break the law because it was the only way they could get change. 1300 black children arrested. Department stores desegregated, racial discrimination in employment outlawed. Most schools and public areas still segregated. MLK and SCLC criticised for using children in their campaign. SCLC, media attention, President Kennedy

King becomes famous worldwide – Ghana reported the march as revolutionary. King became face of the civil rights movement. SNCC, SCLC, CORE, NAACP, media attention. Chicago Campaign 1966 Organised by King – to address employment and housing in Chicago. Turned into a riot – MLK couldn’t stop it. Mayor Daley went back on his promises about desegregating housing once MLK and SCLC left the area. Went against King’s policy of non violence. SCLC Meredith March - 1966 Organised by James Meredith, to encourage blacks to register to vote. MLK joined in. MLK and peaceful protest v. Stokely Carmichael and violence. 4,077 blacks registered to vote. Meredith
