Citizenship: Rights and Responsibilities As citizens we have several rights, but we also have responsibilities.

Review: Representative Republic Our nation is listed as a Democratic Republic, where the people have a say in government, usually through voting. The citizens elect representatives to make decisions for the people. These elected representatives are responsible to the people. We elect people at the local, state and Federal level including: LocalStateFederal Sheriff, Council members, city mayor, district judge, district attorney State legislature, state judges, attorney general, Governor, Comptroller Senator, Congressman, President

Rule of Law The rule of law means that no person is above the law, not even the government officials. Many times throughout history our elected officials have been impeached. Impeach- Charge an elected official with wrongdoing.

Review: Enlightenment During the Enlightenment, many thinkers began to examine the relationship between the government and the people. These thinkers promoted the idea that the government must protect the people. Famous thinkers such as John Locke promoted the natural rights, Life, Liberty and Property.

Review: Social Contract While the Enlightened thinkers inevitably believed the government is required to protect certain rights for the people, they also pushed for the social contract. In a contract, both parties must agree to certain conditions. In the social contract the people agree to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of being a citizen.

Rights Individual rights are things every person has a claim or privilege to have for themselves. The Founding Fathers created the Bill of Rights to protect all American Citizens.

Citizenship Definition: To be a member of a nation or country, and to have full rights and responsibilities under the law

14 th amendment After the Civil War, Congress added the 14 th Amendment to the Constitution. The 14 th amendment grants citizenship to all people born on American Soil or to American parents. In the 1960s Congress clarified the amendment with a law saying citizenship cannot be denied because of race or gender.

Immigrants and Citizenship For a naturalized citizen you must meet the following criteria: -18 years old + -permanent resident for 5 years -have good character (references) -speak English -Pass a Civics Test and interview

Rights and Responsibilities American Citizens have a number of rights, but they also have certain responsibilities. The Social contract works both ways. RightsResponsibilities 1)Freedom of Speech 2)Freedom of Religion 3)Freedom of Press 4)Protection under the law 5)Access to the judicial system 1)Serve on a jury 2)Obey laws 3)Tolerating differences in those around us 4)Participating in government 5)Voting 6)Be informed

Types of Rights People put rights into all kinds of categories, but two common categories include: Personal Rights- Allow people to live how they want as long as it doesn’t get in the way of other people’s rights Political Rights- Allow people to participate in the political process. We need participation to have democracy

Freedom of Religion Personal or Political? Determine if the following is a personal or political right. To help you decide: --Personal rights impact the way people live their lives. --Political rights impact how people participate in the political process. Additionally, all males between the ages of 18 and 26 must register for Selective Service! Responsibilities All these freedoms come with responsibilities and duties: Personal Duties- Jury Duty, Pay Taxes, Obey Laws, Register for Selective Service, get an education Social Responsibilities- Stay informed, tolerate others, protect public safety, register to vote, speak your mind

Voting Rights Amendments There are several Constitutional Amendments that deal with voting rights: -15 th – 1869 males of all races can vote -19 th – 1919 Women can vote -23 rd – 1961 limited voting rights to Washington DC residents -24 th – 1964 banned poll taxes and literacy tests -26 th – 1971 lowered the voting age to 18

Citizen responsibilities As an American you also have a variety of responsibilities to help make the nation strong and work efficiently. Some of these duties include: 1) Jury Duty 2) Obeying laws 3) Tolerating differences 4) Participating in government 5) VOTING 6) Staying Informed Why is it important to have a Jury when you are being tried? If citizens stop obeying the laws, what does the government do? Name a group that is often assumed to be terrorists. Other than voting, what are ways you can be involved in the government? Why is Voting so important? Which elections make the biggest impact on your personal life? Why is it so important for an American to be informed?

Major Elections While the Presidential election is the most popular, expensive and widely publicized, there are several other elections that are far more important for the running of our nation. Elections for members of your local government or even for Congress have a far more profound effect on the running of our nation because they create the laws and taxes we live with.

Task 1)In what ways have you participated in government? Why did you choose to get involved? (if you haven’t done anything, why not?) 2)Often times voters feel their votes do not go anywhere, or help change anything. However, most of these voters focus on federal elections. What type of elections might provide more buy in from the voters and why? 3)Imagine you were running for public office, at any level. Create a campaign poster, or short summary of your goals and political views and what you would hope to accomplish in office. (posters should include more than your “vote for (your name) ”

Project In groups of 3-4 brainstorm problems or issues at WHS you would like to fix, and create a plan of action to create the change. This can include a variety of things including, but not limited to, petitions, board of education meetings, conferences with school officials, or public input. Each group will present their ideas so be prepared with a poster, PowerPoint, Prezi, video or other form of visual presentation. The goal of your presentation should be 2 fold: 1) Present the problem and your plan to remedy it 2) Be engaging and informative and get MORE people to join your cause. No 2 groups can do the same topic. You must tell me your topic to get it reserved You have 3 class days to work on this project.
