Engineers Make a World of Difference MCC & Affinity Groups Future State Proposal Jonna Gerken & Christine Cabrera March 2015
2
MCC Charter Purpose (as currently stated) The Multicultural Committee (MCC) provides resources to the Society in its efforts to promote engineering by stimulating interest among and encouraging the active participation of underrepresented groups in the engineering community. The MCC serves as a resource to people interested in increasing their awareness of diversity and the issues associated with it. The MCC serves as a forum for discussion on topics of diversity
3
Resources/Awareness of Diversity MCC should be a partner with SWE HQ Plan to work with Peter/Mary directly to provide regular updates to the MCC committee. MCC to participate in the new D&I webinars/training modules Committed to providing feedback to HQ and to recommend to liaison organizations. We need to build some credibility of the MCC, and we think this could be a good start.
4
Active Participation/Awareness of Diversity MCC should be identifying specific candidates for leadership roles Should involve some guidance from Jonna and Esther's experience about what it takes to be successful in these positions Use monthly meetings to narrow down candidates to submit for nomination
5
Forum for Discussion/Active Participation MCC should empower Affinity Groups to be more strategic, Champions to focus on 3 goals for the year: Education - (e.g. sponsor 1 webinar towards the demographic the group represents, for example: the state of native American women in engineering) Outreach - (e.g. establish a ‘liaisonship’ with the organization and look for opportunities to strategically collaborate with the organization-NSBE, SHPE, AISES, SASE, CIE, etc) Systemic/Strategic (e.g. scout for leaders within partner organizations who would be interested in serving in leadership roles with SWE at the local, regional and Society levels)
6
Charter Scope Alignment Provide tools and share best practices to help all member segments increase the conversation, awareness and outreach of diversity and inclusion. Identify potential leadership candidates and mentor them throughout their SWE careers. Seek out and highlight engineering role models from underrepresented minorities Participate in judging and criteria development for diversity focused awards, at all levels of the Society. have not been asked for several years Lead development of affinity groups Partner with other SWE organizational units to highlight member needs and interests and to create an inclusive SWE environment including but not limited to: Conference Programming Board Membership Professional Development

MCC Leadership Discussion/Concerns 1.being advisors for diversity training modules (concept, beta, launch) 2.what do we want AGs to do vs what do they need 3.MCC conference virtual panel - raise awareness of exclusionary practices/unconscious actions limiting participation 4.focus on capturing new member stories/experiences/sensitivities that can be rolled to HQ 5.joint membership vs AGs - pros/cons 6.place for people with D&I passion if no MCC 7."question of the quarter" - what should SWE look like for you? 8.Have follow up call with Mary and Peter to discuss further delineation between MCC & HQ activities

Questions to consider How can we share best practices? Is this a communication method or do we expect more from our sponsors? How often do we expect sponsors to get engaged? Does it make sense to keep the affinity groups under MCC even with BOD sponsors? Anything else?
