1
ALGAE AS A BIOFUEL HANNAH ALLEN
2
ALGAE RANGES FROM MICROSCOPIC CYANOBACTERIA TO GIANT KELP CONVERTS SUNLIGHT -> ENERGY VIA PHOTOSYNTHESIS GREAT DIVERSITY LEADS TO GREAT GENETIC DIVERSITY
3
How Does It Work?
4
Production RESOURCES NECESSARY TO GROW ALGAE SUSTAINABLY - NON-ARABLE LAND - NON-POTABLE WATER - WASTE NUTRIENT STREAMS - WASTE CARBON DIOXIDE - SUFFICIENT SUNLIGHT
5
How Efficient Is It?
6
Advantages -Bio-based fuel with essentially carbon neutral combustion -Drop in replacement for petroleum-based liquid fuels -Inherently renewable -Absorbs carbon dioxide as it grows -Both waste CO2 and wastewater can be used as nutrients -Higher energy per-acre than other bio-fuels -Can be grown on land unsuitable for other types of agriculture -Scalable: Study found that 17 percent of U.S. oil imports could be met with algae
7
Cost of Production? -PROJECTED PRODUCTION COSTS= $32-$44 PER BARREL
8
Tradeoffs? DISADVANTAGES -High growth rate BUT low oil yield -Extraction techniques & technologies need further advancement -Need to be grown under controlled temperature conditions -Requires a considerable amount of land and water
9
Is it worth it? US GOVERNMENT SAYS YES. -$18 MILLION ON 6 NEW ALGAE BIOFUEL PROJECTS -GOAL: DROP COSTS TO $3/ GALLON BY 2030
