Procedure for Operating Pedestal Drills (Revision 1 – 24th November 2010) Toolbox Talk
2
Hazards and risks The main hazards associated with the use of pedestal drills are: Injury from violent spinning of the workpiece due to poor clamping arrangement. Entanglement of hair clothing or jewellery in the rotating drill tip, spindle or chuck. Cuts from swarf. Injury from chuck keys ejected from rotating chucks. Injury to the eyes from flying swarf or pieces of fractured drills.
3
Authorised persons The drill may only be used by trained and authorised persons. A list of the persons authorised to use the drill is kept by the Senior Maintenance Engineer and displayed at the Bedford Road and Rowett workshops.
4
PPE to be worn when using pedestal drills Safety glasses/goggles. Hearing protection – if appropriate Loose fitting clothing, jewellery, scarves or anything else that could become entangled in the wheel must not be worn. Rings must be removed or taped over. Long hair must be tied back. Gloves must not be worn.
5
Checks prior to using the machine Examine the floor area around the drill to ensure there are no slip or trip hazards. The hatched area must be kept clear. Check that the chuck key has been removed from the chuck before starting the machine. Dangerous practice – chuck key not removed when in operation Chuck key removed from drill before operation
6
Checks prior to using the machine (continued) The workpiece must be securely clamped to the work table, the workpiece must never be held by the hands whilst drilling. Bad practice – workpiece not clamped to table held by hand. Chuck key also left in drill. Good practice – workpiece clamped to table.
7
Checks prior to using the machine (continued) The fixed adjustable guard must be adjusted so that the spindle and drill tip are guarded to the greatest extent possible. Drill tip not guarded Drill tip guarded to greatest extent possible
8
Checks prior to using the machine (continued) Remove swarf using a brush, do not use hands.
