San Diego de Alcala was the first mission. Some small pueblos became large cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Barbra, San Diego. Where crops were grown. Presidios also became centers for trade. The women sewed, cooked, gardened, and made candles and soap. Older people fished and made arrows. Men farmed and cared for animals Were not far away from the Missions. Men farmed and cared for the animals. People living in pueblos grew food for the soldiers in the presidios(forts) Where animals are raised and cared for. The Spanish word for Fort. Were set up for religious purposes. Pueblo is the for Spanish word for village. The Spanish word for ranch. The home of soldiers who protected the missions.

Mission Life They wanted the California Indians to be Catholic. From 1769 to 1821 many missions were created. Many California Indians worked on the missions. The men farmed and cared for animals while the women cooked , sewed ,gardened , and made candles and soap. Older people fished and made arrows.

Problems at the Mission
Some of the California Indians chose to live and work at the missions. They were forced to give up their ways of life. Some were not free to leave. The California Indians decided to fight the missions. San Diego de Alcala was rebuilt after being burnt down in an Indian attack in 1775.

San Diego de Alcala was the first mission built. My mission is located in San Diego. This mission is 0 miles from San Diego. The founder of this mission was Father Junipero Serra. This mission was named for St. Didacus of Alcala.
