1 Year 5 Summer 1 2016 “Explosions” Skills Literacy Reading Predict what might happen from details implied. Summarise the main ideas from a paragraph. Discuss how the use of language impacts the reader. Writing In narratives, describe the characters and setting and use dialogue to move the story forward. Use a wide range of devices to build cohesion within and across paragraphs. Ensure the correct subject and verb agreement. Grammar and Punctuation Modal verbs. Relative pronouns and clauses. Cohesion. Propose changes to grammar and vocab. Spelling Words ending in ‘ant’ and ‘ance’. Adding suffixes beginning with vowel letters. Further prefixes and suffixes. Science – Properties and change of materials Compare and group everyday materials on the basis of their properties. Know that some materials will dissolve in liquid to form a solution and describe how to recover a substance. Discuss how mixtures might be separated. Describe and conduct fair tests, giving reasons for everyday materials and showing reversible and irreversible changes. RE What is the best way for a Sikh to show their commitment to God? Maths Multiply and divide whole numbers and decimals by 10, 100 and 1000. Square and cube numbers. Read and write decimal numbers as fractions. Order and compare decimal numbers up to 3 decimal places. Round decimal numbers to 3 dec places. Find the perimeter and area of regular and irregular shapes. Multiply fractions by whole numbers. Find percentages of numbers and convert into decimals. Find the angles in a rectangle. Identify 3D shapes from different angles. Single step and multi step problem solving in all areas. History Develop a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of world history. Construct informed responses that involve thoughtful selection and organisation of relevant historical information. Note connections, contrasts and trends over time and develop the appropriate use of historical terms PE Swimming lessons. Dance – planned my Laura Computing Design and write programmes that accomplish specific goals, including stimulating specific goals. DT Investigate and analyse a range of existing products. Evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria. French Describe the colour of an animal and it’s size. Recognise my school subjects in French. Music Develop an understanding of the history of music.

2 Year 5 Summer 1 2016 “Explosions” Suggested Activities Literacy Write a fable that contains a clear moral to help us in our lives. Write our own legend, using facts from the internet. Research what legends are. Use speech in the legend. Create our own machine and write an explanation about it. Write and perform our own myth based on a true event. Write a story using all the skills we have learnt throughout year 5. Maths Know times tables up to 12 x 12 and get full marks on the quiz. Start to memorise division facts too. Find percentages of money and find out how much things would cost in a sale. Find the objects with the largest perimeter and area in our school. Does a large perimeter also mean a large area? Problem solving in context. Science Visit to MOSI in Manchester and conduct experiments showing changes of state. Create our own fair tests, testing out how to reverse changes and which materials are good for different jobs. RE Research how the Sikhs live and what is important to them. Write a diary entry as though you are a Sikh person. Create a drama showing how Sikhs go about their day to day life. History DT link - Make some food using Mayan recipes. DT link – investigate their housing and build our own Mayan house. Create a quiz to test each other’s knowledge about what we have learnt. PE Swimming lessons every Thursday. Swim a full length of the pool. Dance – link to the Mayans Art/DT. Link to history – build a Mayan house. Link to history – make some Mayan food. French Speak in French for a whole lesson to see if we are able to understand what is being said. Describe our own pets. Music Listen to music that has been performed in different years and recreate our favourite piece. Computing Create a programme using a code that makes a model move. Make our own game. Watch how each other makes a game using code.
