What is a Political Party? Political Party- organization of individuals w/ broad common interest who organize to win elections and influence gov. policy. US = two-party system – Republicans (Grand Old Party or G.O.P., elephant, red) – Democrats, (donkey, blue) Germany= 5 party system, Israel=20 party system, China= 1 party system Advantages & Disadvantages?

Party Platform- every 4 years each party writes out their platform at their presidential nominating convention. Platform is a document that describes the goals, principles and positions on election issues that the party holds. Plank- each individual part of the platform. Democrat More directly involved in regulating the economy to protect people Provide housing, income, education, and jobs for the poor More liberal on social issues Republican Less regulation helps nation’s economy grow Poor people have a better chance on their own if you fix the economy More conservative on social issues

PrecinctPrecinct- geographic area that contains a specific number of voters. Average size = 1,100 people. Determines where you go to cast your vote. I Polling Place per precinct. Ward- several connected precincts

National Conventions (DNC & RNC) Every 4 years 1. Delegates meet from all 50 states, D.C., and US territories. 2. Decide/write party platform 3. Nominate Pres & VP 4. Fundraise

Partisan- a firm adherent to a party, faction, cause, or person; especially one exhibiting blind, prejudiced, and unreasoning allegiance Bipartisan- involving members of two parties; specifically marked by or involving cooperation, agreement, and compromise between two major political parties Nonpartisan has no political party connection. (Judges run in nonpartisan elections).

Primaries; The 1 st Round in the Election Process Direct Primary-. Narrows down the field of possible candidates. – Open Primary- You do not have to be in a particular party to vote. Not many states have this type. – Closed Primary- You must be a declared member of a particular party to vote for that party’s nominees. – Semi-Closed Primary- if you are an independent you can choose 1 party to vote for

Results Plurality- (relative majority) received the most votes, but not more than 50%. Majority- received more than 50% of the votes.
