1
Parts of a PC Unit one.
2
What is a DVD A DVD is a disc able to hold large amounts of high definition data such as a movie A device such as a DVD player is required to read the data and project it onto a screen or provide a signal that the television can read and project.
3
What is Secondary Storage Secondary storage is useful if you need to expand the primary storage in your PC you could purchase an external hard drive and put all your seldom used files onto it Secondary storage comes in many different forms such as an external hard drive, or a USB flash drive
4
What is Primary Storage Primary storage is a lot like secondary storage except it is inside the computer. Primary storage can come in multiple forms such as an HDD (Hard disc drive) or an SSD (Solid State Drive) SSD’s have no moving parts so they are very reliable and fast.
5
What is a Monitor A monitor is what displays everything from the computer. It receives the signal from the graphics card (GPU) and displays it
6
What is a Keyboard A keyboard is what you do all your typing on, it sends a command to the computer which is then interpreted and then sent as a command to the program you’re running
7
What is a Scanner A scanner is an external device that is designed for you to put a piece of paper into it, then it scans and renders a document that looks almost exactly like the paper you put into the scanner
8
What is a graphics tablet A graphics tablet is an external device used with a pen designed to work on it, this gives you a feeling like your writing on a piece of paper
9
What is a Laser Printer A laser printer is an external device used to print documents. The laser printer is hooked into your computer, the computer sends signals to the printer Laser printers are like the opposite of a scanner, it receives the document and creates it
10
What is a Mouse A mouse is an external use controller that controls the cursor on the monitor. Mice work by using a sensor on the bottom that puts virtual dots on the desk, these dots are measured in DPI (Dots Per Inch) these dots control the sensitivity of the mouse
11
What is a Hard Drive A hard drive (or HDD) is a form of primary storage HDD’s store everything on the computer, the operating system, all the files, and anything else
12
What is a Sound Card A sound card is used on computers without a dedicated section on the motherboard for sound. The reason sound cards are used is to reduce the sound of electrical chatter they achieve this by not being crouded and avoiding all the chatter a motherboard without a dedicated sound card would create
13
What is a Power Supply A power supply (PSU for short) is an internal device that takes the electric current from the wall and reduces/amplifys it, then it sends it through the wires with special plugs made to match the motherboard, graphics card, hard drive and whatever else is needed.
14
What is a CD-ROM Drive A CD-ROM drive is an internal device that reads and writes information on a CD-ROM CD-ROM’s are similar to a usb thumb drive when it comes to functionality, however CD-ROM’s don’t hold that much information because they are older
15
What is BIOS BIOS is one of the first things you need to change when you get a newly built computer to post BIOS is what controls what drive the computer boots from, gives a basic readout of fan speeds, and processor temperatures. BIOS is critical to the startup functionality of the computer BIOS information is one of the few things that is stored in the motherboard.
16
What is a Motherboard A motherboard (or MOBO) is the main frame of internal hardware in a computer Every part of hardware for a computer is either directly or indirectly linked to the motherboard. The Processor (CPU), Graphics card (GPU) Hard drive (HDD), power supply (PSU) and everything else like a mouse and keyboard all go into the usb outlets at the back
17
What is a Network Card A network card is an internal device that is plugged into the motherboard via the PCI-E slot Network cards make it easier for lower end motherboards to handle speedy internet speeds.
18
What is RAM RAM (Random Access Memory) allows files to be read and written at fast speeds More RAM means the computer can perform tasks faster.
19
What is a Flash Drive A flash drive is a form of secondary storage, It plugs into the USB port and stores data
20
What is a Video Graphics Card A graphics card (or GPU) is attached to the motherboard and is used as a replacement for the integrated graphics that come on the motherboard and can only handle so much rendering, etc.
21
What is ROM A rom chip is similar to RAM, however it can be written onto a rom chip but once it is written it can only be read, not removed
