What do the following items on the list below say about Gatsby’s character? ● He shows Nick a war medal and a picture of him at Oxford to prove his background story ● He says San Francisco is in the Mid-West ● The “sad thing” that happened to him “long ago” is not the death of his family. ● He is able to get out of a ticket because he “was able to do the commissioner a favor once.” ● His tendency to be there one moment and gone the next (End of chapter 4, when Nick introduces him to Tom, when Nick brings Daisy into the living room). ● He uses Meyer Wolfshiem as a character reference. ● He needs to show off his house to Daisy. ● He evades Nick’s questions about what business he is in. ● His tone during the phone conversation he has in chapter 5.

Answer the question that your group is assigned: Find as many references to death as you can in chapters 4 and 5. What is the significance of each reference? What two cases of reckless driving occur in chapter 4? Who is involved? What do these incidents say about the drivers? What evidence is there that Gatsby had his first meeting with Daisy planned out in detail? What happens to disrupt his plan?

Upon crossing the bridge into New York City, Nick says, “The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and beauty of the world.” Yet, Nick’s experiences in New York don’t always match this idealized view. In what ways is Gatsby’s dream of Daisy also unrealistic? What are some of the consequences of transporting his relationship with Daisy from his fantasies into reality? Where else in these chapters is there a contrast between fantasy (illusion) and reality?

Gatsby does the following in his pursuit of Daisy: ● Buys the house directly across the bay from Daisy ● Stares at the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock ● Throws parties hoping Daisy will show up ● “Casually” asks people who come to his parties whether or not they know Daisy ● Seeks out Jordan and Nick when he finds out they know Daisy ● Doesn’t want Daisy to know that he is also coming to tea at Nick’s house ● Knows exactly how long it has been since he last saw Daisy ● Has a scrapbook of newspaper clippings about Daisy Are these the actions of a hopeless romantic or a stalker? Or are they something else?

● The green light at the end of Daisy’s dock ● The clock on Nick’s mantle ● Gatsby’s shirts What is the symbolism of the following objects? ● The lighting at Gatsby’s house when they are listening to Klipspringer play the piano

For Block-morrow: ● Read Chapter 6 of The Great Gatsby ● Take notes on the disparity between social classes in the chapter. To do this, you can compare and contrast details within chapter 6 as well as compare and contrast details in chapter 6 with details in other chapters you have read. Think about the differences between: ○ Rich and Poor ○ Old Money and New Money ● Fill out your color log ● Come prepared for a half block workshop to prepare for your group presentation!
