Sustainable Development Economist.com (2009). Technology Monitor. Rolling out the changes. Fuel-efficient tyres.

Fuel-efficient tyres What are they? How are they different? How does this affect us?

What are they? Tyres for cars (family cars and racing alike). Designed for less fuel consumption. Reduce “rolling resistance”. Power supplied to tyres lost as heat. Contributes to 4% of the worlds carbon-dioxide emissions. Improve fuel economy by reducing “rolling resistance”. “Rolling resistance”

How are they different? 20% of the energy to power a car is used by the tyres. What makes the tyres different is that they have a “special security compound” so that the tyres retain the rigidity and make them feel like normal tyres. Compared to the standard tyres, they have an increase of fuel- efficiency by 8%. Saves the owner enough petrol to drive more than 4,000 extra kilometres.

Cars currently fitted. There are new models of cars that are sold with the tyres that include; 2010 Toyota Prius in particular will feature fuel-efficient tyres with a special compound to help reduce the fuel consumption further. Also, the 2010 Ford Fusion and the 2011 Chevrolet Volt will feature these type of tyres to encourage the use of the tyres.

How does this affect us? Pro’s; Fuel-efficient tyres help cars become greener. Saves the owner money due to the fact petrol will go a lot further in the car that uses the tyres. Con’s; Due to the fact that they are made by chemical engineering, they are slightly more expensive than a normal set.
