Marketing of PhD Studentships Paul Barrett Research and Innovation Support Conference

Where are we? Market research looked at: Decision making & application process The role of funding Why Leeds? Why not Leeds? Early satisfaction and expectations Segmentation.

Research and Innovation Support Conference Why study for a PhD? Passion for subject, personal development, academic/ research career –passion for the subject is the key factor for early career stage UK market –non-UK applicants and those in advancing career stage are driven by the desire to follow an academic or research career. Key information sources: university websites, potential supervisors, colleagues/ staff at previous institutions. –71% of applicants consider ease of access to information on PhD programmes as important factor when deciding where to apply. Satisfaction with UoL website is variable… Leading factors in the decision to apply and accept: reputation of institution and department, availability of research area, reputation of the supervisor. –early career Leeds Alumni students most likely to register as students. –driven by a passion for the subject. –availability of funded projects is particularly important. –Research study should be promoted in their final year, through academic staff but also through current PhD students.

Research and Innovation Support Conference How can we get to where we want to be? PGR online PG Open Day PGR Guide PGR application process Virtual PG Open Days.

Research and Innovation Service New PGR website Development of the postgraduate website to include: Video Current and alumni PGR profiles Supervisor profiles Clear calls to action – apply now or order a guide Overhaul of online PGR application process.

Research and Innovation Support Conference First University-wide PG Open Day

Research and Innovation Service Dedicated PG guide for international and domestic audience

Research and Innovation Support Conference Integrate PGR into broader R&I marketing

Research and Innovation Support Conference Next steps? Launch new PGR website and new PGR Guide PG Open Day – evaluate impact and tweak, perhaps run alongside Showcase Conference in future? Overhaul online PGR application process – not all faculties need a research proposal upfront Develop Virtual PG Open Days Produce and share a revised PGR marketing strategy - better aligning our activity to reflects identified research strengths and opportunities.

Research and Innovation Support Conference Role of the Graduate School Faculty/ school strategic planning Implementation of policy Admission & recruitment Student support & progression Support to academic staff Management/ co-management of RCUK studentships (DTCs etc).

Research and Innovation Support Conference How are PhD studentships supported financially? Number of Sources of funding: Research Council Doctoral Training Grants Doctoral Training Centres/ Partnerships e.g. Research Councils, Wellcome Trust etc EU funding Individual awards from Charities or other public funders (Overseas or UK) Industry – fully funded or CASE Self funded University Scholarships.

Research and Innovation Support Conference Biological Sciences intake 2012 Type of fundingNumber of students% RCUK2027 Charity1419 EU57 University scholarship811 Overseas sponsor1014 Industry34 Self811 Other57

Research and Innovation Support Conference Problems with the current mode of operation Different graduate support structures in different faculties Sometimes communication is poor between the FRO and the Graduate function Don’t really understand each others roles No joint forums, even though we both deal with research awards Je-S has caused issues as all studentships are now dealt with via Je-S and we have no set procedure to deal with this Don’t always have a clear division of responsibilities or standard procedures.

Research and Innovation Support Conference Over to you How can we work more productively with our Graduate Offices/ Graduate Schools? How can the FRO help to grow the numbers of PhD students?
