1 Welcome! BAT & FLTE Licensure Admissions Application Information Meeting Fall Semester 2015

2 General Application Information Application deadline: MONDAY FEBRUARY 1, 2016 Application format Accessible online ONLY at the FLTE website (flte.illinois.edu) U of I e-mail address required as an identifier

3 Admissions Test Requirements In order to be fully admitted to the BAT, a passing score from one of the tests below must be submitted to the CoTE! Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP) http://www.il.nesinc.com/IL_testinfo.asp?t=400 OR ACT/SAT Scores  Required minimum score = 22, including writing component  Scores older than 5 years will not be acceptable

4 BAT/FLTE Licensure Application Packet There are six sections to the application: 1. Application form 2. Pre-professional Field Experience forms:  Tutoring (maximum of 2)  Shadowing (2)  School Board Meeting (1) 3. Dispositional Statements 4. 8-Semester Plan 5. DARS Report 6. Resume

5 Tutoring...  Has a 25 hour requirement  Can be completed locally or at a school near your home  May not take place in more than 2 schools  Is not the only way to engage with learners; also try teaching a mini-lessons or co-teaching with your Cooperating Teacher (CT), providing accelerated work to students who are able to work ahead, facilitate conversation groups after school or with students in a class;  Must be completed in the language you will teach  ESL/Bilingual field work will not be accepted

6 Shadowing... Consists of two shadowing experiences that applicants must complete. The minimum requirement for each experience is five field hours. 1. Building leader: Principal Assistant Principal 2. Student Services Provider: Guidance Counselor School Social Worker

7 School Board Meeting... Is the final field experience for the application. What is required for this field experience?  Attend one complete school board meeting  Pick up a copy of the meeting agenda & other handouts as available  Take notes as needed to support response to questions on the admissions application NOTE: Board meetings are open to the public. No reservation is required. Look at the district homepage & calendar to determine the date/time/location of the meeting you would like to attend.

8 Hours Verification Forms There are two forms to complete for each Field Experience. FORM I:  One for each Cooperating Teacher to complete (maximum of 2)  One for the Principal/Assistant Principal to complete  One for the Guidance Counselor/School Social Worker to complete FORM II: Applicant reflection for tutoring Applicant reflection form for shadowing the principal Applicant reflection form for shadowing guidance counselor Applicant response form for school board meeting

9 IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER! Hours verification forms are the same as a professional references for the application. So it is important to participate fully when in the field! The form for the school board meeting is completed by the applicant only!

10 Dispositional Statements The application includes six dispositional statements that you will be required to write & submit. Each short essay has a prompt to which you will respond. There is also a stated word limit. Make sure your response to the prompt falls within the words limit. The online form will not accept excess words. Essays range from 75-300 words.

11 Remaining Components of the BAT/FLTE Online Application The remaining documents for the application (sections 4, 5, 6) are student generated.  8 semester plan  DARS Report  Resume

12 REMEMBER … Prior to uploading the BAT/FLTE application, each applicant must:  Meet with the advisor to ensure the 8- or 10- semester has been reviewed & signed  Print & review the DARS report for accuracy  Revise & polish the most current copy of the resume

13 Other Considerations for BAT/FLTE Licensure Applicants  Applicants seeking admission to the BAT may not have another BA or BS degree  To be competitive when seeking admission to the BAT, applicants should have a minimum 2.5 GPA in the major/language they plan to teach, & minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA at the U of I at the time of application.

14 Other Considerations for BAT/FLTE Licensure Applicants  Competitive applicants must be able to demonstrate strong writing skills: clear & well organized presentation of ideas in extended discourse/expository writing, attention to grammar & syntax, & clearly stated ideas about teaching & learning.  Applicants must provide evidence of completion of all required field experiences: tutoring, shadowing a principal or assistant principal, shadowing a guidance counselor or school social worker, & attendance at school board meeting.
