Ja’Dell previously taught high school in Philadelphia public schools, and implemented college access and academic enrichment programming in Chester, Pennsylvania and New York City in Manhattan’s Lower East Side neighborhood. Ja’Dell received her B.A. from Swarthmore College with a special major in History and Educational Studies, and a minor in Black Studies. She completed her M.S.Ed in Secondary School Education at the University of Pennsylvania. 3. In eastern Myanmar’s Shan State stands Kakku, a Buddhist holy site spreading across a hillside outside the city of Taunggyi. It’s believed the first construction of Kakku began in the 3 rd century BC and it has been extensively restored since. The 2,478 stupas – the tiny, pagoda-like prayer mounds that make Kakku resemble a mini-city – reflect a variety of construction styles. Some are simple with little decoration, while others are incredibly ornate, their facades adorned with carvings of mythic creatures. In the Burmese lunar month of Tabaung (usually March in the Western calendar), the Kakku Paya Pwe festival draws pilgrims from around Shan State. They come on the day of the full moon to pray at the stupas. But visitors can stroll through the stupa garden any time of year, paying a small donation to help with the upkeep of Kakku.
