It’s all about delivering measurable and sustainable improvement in literacy and numeracy achievement for all students especially those children who need additional help. If your school chooses to participate it will receive funding and support to identify and implement evidence-based interventions that complement and strengthen your commitment to improving your students’ literacy and numeracy achievement.

5 Literacy and Numeracy Partnership Project Curriculum Partnerships Proven Approach - Three key reform areas: Effective and evidence-based teaching of literacy and numeracy Strong school leadership and whole-school engagement with literacy and numeracy Monitoring of student and school literacy and numeracy performance to identify where support is needed

6 Literacy and Numeracy Partnership Project Curriculum Partnerships Proven evidence-based strategies whole-school planning and approaches; use of data and other evidence related to student performance; including the On-entry Assessment and the EAL/EAD Progress Map; case-management approaches; Literacy and Numeracy Specialist Teachers; First Steps strategies including Guided Reading and Calculate; and literacy blocks and/or numeracy blocks; Schools will be required to consider the following evidenced-based strategies for inclusion into their plan:

8 Literacy and Numeracy Partnership Project Curriculum Partnerships What does a case-management approach mean? This means using available data to identify individual student or groups of students learning needs so that teachers can effectively differentiate instruction to build on and extend each student’s literacy and/or numeracy skills. A case-management approach allows school leadership to narrow their focus and then to accountably plan; whether this be to direct instruction selection or resource allocation.

9 Literacy and Numeracy Partnership Project Curriculum Partnerships A case-management approach can be achieved by: setting realistic targets for the next stage of learning; identifying and planning learning and teaching support to help students achieve their literacy and/or numeracy targets and learning goals, and to overcome barriers to learning; being inclusive of students’ cultural, social and academic considerations; encouraging all teachers in the school to take collective responsibility for all students; ensuring consistent review of the data and updated information on students’ progress; using data to inform the ‘next steps’ for meeting the needs of each student and ‘next steps’ for meeting the professional development needs of the teachers within the school; providing leadership that ensures consistent information, communication, coordination and care for students is available to the school community; and

Case-management, whole school planning, guided reading….) Breakdown of expenditure including LNPP funds and school funds (schools are expected to allocate significant school funds as well as LNPP funds) Milestones Planning template and planning support will be provided. Develop a Literacy and Numeracy Partnership Project School Plan using the prescribed template that indicates student achievement targets and how these will be achieved. (To be submitted to the Executive Director Statewide Services for approval by 31 March, 2012)

13 Literacy and Numeracy Partnership Project Curriculum Partnerships Resources Schools will receive additional funding, which can be used as salaries and/or contingencies. Funding varies with the context of the school. As a guide - Indicative notional amounts 200 K-7 students $37500 - $42500 per year for two years 400 K-7 students $77500 - $84000 per year for two years

14 Literacy and Numeracy Partnership Project Curriculum Partnerships What support is available? The Statewide Services LNPP Team comprising two consultant principals, a literacy consultant, a numeracy consultant and an EAL/D consultant has been established to support partnership schools. The support will be provided as required. The team will work at the school leadership, whole-school, and/or classroom level to support improvement in students’ literacy and numeracy skills. The consultant principals are available to: provide principals and schools with a point of contact for project coordination; to support school leadership teams with all operational aspects of the program

15 Literacy and Numeracy Partnership Project Curriculum Partnerships What support is available? …Continued The Literacy, Numeracy and EAL/D consultants are available to: support the development of whole-school literacy and numeracy plans; build the capacity of school-based literacy and numeracy leaders; support schools to implement shoulder-to-shoulder modelling of strategies in classrooms; assist schools use Department literacy and numeracy resources such as the explicit K-7 Literacy and Numeracy Learning and Teaching Resources and the Australian Curriculum to plan learning, teaching and assessment programs; deliver/broker complementary professional learning; interpret student data and provide advice to assist with case-management.

17 Literacy and Numeracy Partnership Project Curriculum Partnerships What now? Discuss this information with your leadership team, literacy and numeracy coordinators and specialist teacher/s. Attend the LNPP Schools information session closest to your school in Weeks 1 or 2, 2012. Consult with your community. Make a decision as to whether your school will or will not join the Literacy and Numeracy Partnership Project and contact the LNPP team by no later than 10 February 2012.
