Physical Education Soccer Vocabulary Words

2 Foul A rule that has been broken. There are two categories, major and minor fouls. Major fouls usually result in a direct free kick. A direct free kick is an attempt to kick directly in goal. Minor fouls result in an indirect free kick. An indirect free kick must come in contact with another player before attempting goal.

3 Kickoff Used to begin games, second halves, restarting after a score & overtimes. Ball is kicked by player.

head the ball accurately to a teammate.

9 Taps Skill used to learn ball control. The foot is used to tap ball. Three basic types are top, side, and drop.

10 Pullback Skill used to change direction of ball. Place foot on top of ball, pull ball slightly backward with bottom of foot and rotate body position.

11 Halfback Also called a midfielder. Located between the fullbacks and the forwards. They are called upon to hold the midfield and to be the link between the defense and the offense.

12 Fullback Fullbacks are the defenders positioned in front of the goalkeeper. They cover the space along the outsides. They are crucial to stopping goals, and take many throw ins. midfield.

13 Receiver The person who receives the ball on a pass. Usually received with the foot but can be received with head, chest, or thigh but not with arms. Receiving a ball is same as trapping a ball.

14 Forward Offensive players who are responsible for scoring goals. They play from the center of the field to the opponent’s goal.

15 Open Space Any part of the field where there isn't a defender, but especially in the area you are attacking (i.e., the area between the ball and the goal).

16 The inside portion of your foot.
Instep The inside portion of your foot.
