Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey in Kazakhstan (fourth round) Astana The Agency of Statistics of the Republic of Kazakhstan

2 Introduction Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) is an international survey program at the household level, developed by UNICEF. MICS is conducted to monitor the situation of women and children in Kazakhstan, for monitoring progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and targets according to the document “A World Fit for Children” (WFFC), and other internationally agreed instruments. For the first time Kazakhstan took part in the MICS surveys in 2005-2006

3 About presentation of the results of MICS-3 in the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan (April, 2008) In 2005-2006 in the Republic of Kazakhstan for the first time was conducted MICS-3 with technical and financial support from UNICEF, UNFPA, USAID, ILO and other UN Agencies in Kazakhstan. In 2008 – the final report was presented in the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the Committee of the social-cultural development. The presentation was interesting for MPs, NGOs, international organizations, media, society and other statistical information users. The results of the survey by different indicators, which are not available in official statistics were especially highlighted. At this conference it was decided to conduct MICS in Kazakhstan every 3 years. The indicators are of strategic important for decision-making in the field of social policy aimed to improve the situation of women and children in the country.

5 MEMORANDUM about UNDERSTANDING among the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan On Statistics, the Office of the United Nations Children's Fund in Kazakhstan and the Office of the United Nations population fund in Kazakhstan to implement “Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) in Kazakhstan” (Kazakhstan, Astana, 8th July, 2010) The reason for conducting MICS-4 in Kazakhstan is

6 Goals of MICS-4 To ensure the completeness and quality indicators, providing relevant and updated data to assess the situation of women and children in Kazakhstan; To provide data needed for monitoring progress toward goals established by the Millennium Development Goals, the goals of A World Fit For Children (WFFC), as well as other targets agreed at the international level; To improve and update of data and monitoring system; To introduce the new 21 indicator.

11 Expected results The results of MICS-4 in Kazakhstan will enable to improve the monitoring of the progress towards national goals and global obligations, including 7 goals of the MDGs, scheduled for 2015. The survey will provide data on such topical issues as: water and sanitation, child discipline, salt iodization, the availability of primary health care, media access and use information and communication technologies, infant mortality, desire the latest births, maternal and child health, symptoms of diseases, contraception, unmet needs, sexual behavior, HIV / AIDS, tobacco and alcohol consumption, abortion, and many other indicators.

12 Expected results The following indicators will be done: By: 4 types of domestic violence against women; Early tobacco and alcohol consumption among the adolescents and young; Sexual behavior of adolescents and young people aged 15-24 years; Abortions; For the first time will be provided information characterizing the male’s situation: education, attitude towards domestic violence, sexual behavior, tobacco and alcohol consumption, contraception use, awareness and comprehensive knowledge of HIV / AIDS, etc.
