APK: You recently learned how our Founding Fathers set up two different groups of government in the United States. We call this system federalism. State GovernmentsFederal Government Connect APK to LO: Students, you already know that federalism is the state and federal government working together. Now, we will look at how the founding fathers set up the federal government. 1 branches: groups

The Constitution is set up with an introduction (preamble) and seven articles or sections. The first three articles set up the three branches of government. 2 Founding Fathers: writers of the Constitution 3 Constitution: a document which sets up the rules for a government 4 interpret: to explain the meaning Justice: a judge who sits on the Supreme Court Legislative BranchExecutive BranchJudicial Branch Role in the Lawmaking process Who is in it? How long do they serve? Makes the law. Congress, which is divided into two houses: The Senate and the House of Representatives. Senators serve for six years. Representatives serve for 2 years. Carries out (enforces) the law. The President, Vice President, and all Executive Departments. The President can serve two terms (4 years each) or 10 years. Interpret 4 the law. The Supreme Court (led by 9 Justices 5 ) and all federal courts. Justices serve for “good behavior” or life. In what year will he be running for re-election? How do you know? Pair Share: If the Vice President were to take over in a Presidents first year in office, could he only serve one term or two full terms of his or her own? How do you know? Pair Share: If there is a disagreement about a law that was passed, who would resolve the disagreement? How do you know?

Article I, Sections 2 and 3 of the Constitution The House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen every second Year by the People of the several States, and the Electors in each State shall have the Qualifications requisite for Electors of the most numerous Branch of the State Legislature. No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the Age of twenty five Years, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen. The House of Representatives shall choose their Speaker and other Officers; and shall have the sole Power of Impeachment. No Person shall be a Senator who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty Years, and been nine Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State for which he shall be chosen. The Vice President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no Vote, unless they be equally divided. Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States. In Case of the Removal of the President from Office, or of his Death, Resignation, or Inability to discharge the Powers and Duties of the said Office, the Same shall devolve on the Vice President, and the Congress may by Law provide for the Case of Removal, Death, Resignation or Inability, both of the President and Vice President, declaring what Officer shall then act as President, and such Officer shall act accordingly, until the Disability be removed, or a President shall be elected. Before he enter on the Execution of his Office, he shall take the following Oath or Affirmation:-"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
