1 China Mini-term On Traditional Chinese Medicine Jianping Feng, Ph.D. German, Russian, Asian Languages & Literatures Tufts University

2 Goal China mini-term focuses on traditional Chinese medicine which has been practiced for thousands of years. We seek to understand its theoretical foundations and practices; how this medical practice changes over time; how modern society adapts the changes; how society as a whole deals with modern medical and health problems. How other countries could adopt it into their medical system. Up to 15 students are accepted to take this journey into the world of Chinese Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese society, and changes taking place in medical practices.

3 Eligibility To be eligible to participate in int’l programs, student s must: Have an overall cumulative average of 2.5 at the time of application. Be in good academic standing and have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 for the term before the program. Successfully have completed two courses at Union College the term before their term abroad program. Meet the minimum language requirement (if any) as specified in the program description. Complete the application process, which includes an essay.application processessay In addition, the International Programs Office will verify with the Office of Financial Services that the student has a clear account balance, and it will obtain certification by the Dean of Students that the student is well prepared to participate in foreign study. (No pre-requisite for this mini-term)

6 classes daily classes of theories of TCM, acupuncture, massage, food cures; lectures on healthcare reform, pharmacological research & development; Clinical/hospital visits; travel in Beijing & another place of importance.

7 Reading ( mandatory ) The Essential Book of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Vol. 1, By Yanchi Liu; etc. Reading quiz (3)

8 Reading Report (oral) 10% Choose one of the following books or go online and find an article to read and then present a book/article report. some suggestions: What Is Medicine?: Western and Eastern Approaches to Healing by Paul U. 9 Exams Each class will have an exam at the end of the term. 45% Massage, Acupuncture, Theories of TCM

10 Final Paper 6-8 pages20%due 8/1/2015 Some suggestions: 1. Should the west adopt Chinese medicine? Why and why not? 2. Why TCM is considered a holistic medicine? In what way it is holistic? 3. What are the theoretical foundations of Chinese Traditional Medicine? 4. What is the medicine of systematic correspondence?

11 Grading Your grade is based on the following: Class attendance and participation15% Exams (3)45% Book/article report(oral)10% Paper 20% Reading quiz (3)10%

12 Practical Matter What are covered by your tuition payment 1.tuition at the host college; (1 credit) 2.double room with shower 3. food money (you will be given $200) 4. travel inside China ( Beijing & 1 other place)

13 Practical Matter What are not covered by you tuition payment: 1. International airfare from U.S. (any city) to Beijing, China ( $1200 +) 2. Visa application fee: $140 (service fee $20) 3. $ 200 to $500 for incidentals, gifts, food & water.
