“medically unexplained illnesses” Somatic Symptom Disorder-> TYPES: Conversion Disorder-> (functional neurological symptom disorder) Person experiences genuine physical symptoms for which no physiological basis can be found. Illness Anxiety Disorder-> (used to be called hypochondriasis)

Definition-> Fugue state-> when a person’s conscious awareness is said to dissociate (become separated) from painful memories, thoughts, and feelings. Type-> Dissociative Identity Disorder (used to be called Multiple Personalities)

Usually not violent Example- Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde “Hillside Strangler” Kenneth Bianchi : Some skeptic about the true existence of this disorder…is it just a sort of “role-playing” for fantasy-prone people? Other cultures would call this “possession” by an alien spirit, etc. Others think DID is an “American fad” But, some see marked changes with different personalities->

Take a minute to review Eating Disorders-> we did this in Motivation unit. Anorexia, Bulimia, and Binge Eating show up in the DSM as a psychological disorder.

Most troubling and most heavily researched of psychological disorders Definition-> What do they look like? Typically male, starts by 15. Start lying, fighting, stealing, or engaging in unrestrained sexual behavior. Sometimes criminal behavior. Hard to keep jobs or maintain relationships. Impulsive, feel and fear little

Genetic links Show low levels of stress hormones when subjected to shock, before committing a crime. Low anxiety. Lack a sense of social responsibility Biological: Childhood maltreatment comes into play. Mixes with genetic factors like increased sensitivity to the maltreatment-> vulnerable to antisocial behavior Hyper-reactive dopamine reward system->
