Where is the Energy? If it is not kinetic, it must be potential, but where? We call this “Elastic Potential Energy” or “Potential Energy of a Spring” in this case Therefore, we say Kinetic Energy is not conserved in an explosion! In fact, it GAINS kinetic energy!

What Happened to This Energy? It should be no surprise that since an explosion does not conserve Kinetic Energy, neither do perfectly inelastic collisions. However, Inelastic Collisions LOST energy. While it did not disappear, it did transform into other types of energy Heat, vibrations, sound, ect.
