2 WHAT MAKES A GOOD MANAGER? 1. Communicate what you want, & listen to what others are saying. 2. Respect your employees, & make them feel like an important part of the operation. 3. Give employees a living wage. 4. Look into benefit packages. 5. Give younger workers an opportunity.

3 GOOD MANAGER CONT. 6. Give older workers an opportunity. 7. Provide employees with the tools and knowledge they need. 8. Delegate responsibility. 9. Teach employees about safety issues on the farm. 10. Set expectations & schedules.

6 Provide Jobs Employees Enjoy Having REMEMBER: (No Job is Perfect) 1. Jobs should be designed whenever possible to encourage employees to use a variety of skills. 2. Jobs should be designed whenever possible so that an employee performs a total job.

9 Satisfy Employee Needs 1. Employees have needs that they desire to satisfy, (which in turn) 2. Leads to actions that will fulfill their needs, (which in turn) 3. Leads to rewards, (which in turn) 4. Reinforces their actions and cause them to be repeated.

10 Jobs (cont.) 3. Jobs should be designed so that the employee understands the significance of his job to the farm. 4. Jobs should be designed so that each employee has responsibility, challenge, freedom and the opportunity to be creative. 5. Supervisors should incorporate feed back into each job.

11 Build a Reputation THIS IS A GOOD PLACE TO WORK! 1. Be known as a good place to work. 2. Provide training for employees so that they can do well in their job. 3. Show trust in employees by delegating authority & responsibility. 4. Catch people doing things right & say! THANK YOU!!

12 REPUTATION (cont.) 5. Develop pride in the farm. 6. Celebrate the farm’s successes. 7. Communicate clearly & often with employees. 8. Compensate employees fairly.

15 Knowing How to Get Along 1. Getting along directly affects your happiness, self-esteem and income. 2. You are creating opportunities for yourself. 3. You are managing a career not just a job.

16 What to Do to Get Along 1. Arrive on time every day & stay until your day’s work is done. 2. Be competent at your job. 3. Ask questions when you don’t understand instructions. 4. Understand your employer’s organizational structure. 5. Admit your mistakes.

17 Getting Along (cont.) 6. Expand your job. 7. Work with open eyes & ears. 8. Be honest. 9. “Read” your employer’s subtle and indirect signals about you & your performance. 10. Choose to be happy on the job. 11. Practice consistency in mood, humor, temperament & cheerfulness.

18 What Not to Do! 1. Make the same mistake twice. 2. Blame co-workers for your own shortcomings. 3. Bad mouth your employer. 4. Gossip. 5. Bring your petty personal problems to work.

19 What Not to Do! (cont.) 6. Gain the favor of co-workers by back stabbing your employer. 7. Join a group of negative co-workers. 8. Allow more experienced or older co- workers to intimidate you. 9. “Show up” long-term employees. 10. Gain the favor of one manager at the expense of another.
