Chinese come into contact with other groups in Central Asia 2. Silk Road: an ancient trade route between China and Europe/Central Asia a. new foods traded: grapes, walnuts, garlic, etc. b. ideas & other goods traded too c. caravans of camels/horses carried trade goods d. Mediterranean Sea to China

4 B. Connecting Roads 1. multiple routes totaling over 4K miles a. from roughly Rhode Island, to Georgia, to California 2. challenging route through mtns. & deserts sometimes 3. China, west to Persia, west to Mesopotamia, north to Turkey a. then goods traded on Mediterranean Sea b. Chinese goods ended up in Greece, Egypt, Rome, & North Africa

5 C. A Route for Goods 1. traders did not travel entire Silk Road a. Trading was like a relay race 2. Price of goods increased with each new trade 3. Silk Road = silk cloth from China a. silkworms used to make silk fibers b. silk was very expensive (still is) c. technique for making silk was kept secret 1. death penalty 4. silk traded in Rome for items such as glass, horses, ivory, wool, linen cloth

Rulers in Han Dynasty encouraged respect a. promoted teaching of philosopher Confucius b. civil service jobs (government jobs) required people be educated 2. arts and poetry flourished in this time 3. Chinese dictionary developed 4. subject of history became important to Chinese B. History of China 1. for a long time people only knew myths about China 2. Sima Qian: recorded China’s ancient history

7 III. Han Technology A. Stable government in Han Dynasty = advances in tech. 1. most advanced civilization at that time B. Advances in Technology 1. farming tools: such as wheelbarrow, iron plow 2. other examples: paper, the compass, a rudder (on a ship), seismoscope (records earthquakes), silk, poetry, bronze work, medical technologies/medicine C. The Invention of Paper 1. writing: wood, bones, silk, then on paper (by 105 A.D.) a. wood is ground up in to pulp, soaked in water, spread screen to dry as paper 2. eventually paper replaces papyrus from Egypt
