Meridian Gate Built in 1420 It is 37.95 meters high It is the main gate of the Forbidden City The bells and drums were used in important ceremonies

Watch Tower One of the watchtowers on the four corners of the wall surrounding the “city.” Every tower is held up by nine beams. The towers are also held up by 18 pillars They also have three layers of eaves.

Gate of Supreme Harmony The square in between the Meridian Gate and the Gate of supreme Harmony. Honored guards would line up in this square before important ceremonies

Hall of Supreme Harmony It was built from south to North on a eight- meter-high foundation Referred to as the throne. 35 meters high Highest hall in the city Used for important ceremonies

Hall of Medium Harmony This is the hall where emperors have rested before major ceremonies. Hall of Protective Harmony Location where emperors gave banquets. Also held interviews with those who have had passed the imperial examination.

Imperial Gardens This is the view the Emperor would have when he entered. It was built in 1417 The urn in the center was used as an incense burner.

Interesting Facts Forbidden City has 720,000 sm. 9,999 rooms in the palace Walls are 32 ft. high Cauldrons filled with water were located throughout the palace

Living in The Forbidden City The Emperors of the Ming and Quing Dynasty lived at the palace with their families. Male servants (a.k.a. enuchs) were harshly treated Around the 19th century, about 9,000 people lived in the Forbidden City.
