English is a lingua franca, a language used locally and internationally, not only among the native speakers but by anyone wishing to activate his or her role as a member of an international communicative network. And to be teacher of English today is to play an inevitable part in this globalizing enterprise, to recognize new areas for inquiry now raised perhaps for the first time in the long history of ELT. The purpose of the symposium, therefore, is to canvass some of the major themes and questions challenging the new worlds of ELT. The questions, besides being the points of departure, are also the points of convergence for discussion, reflection and interaction among teachers of English; they are the starting points for action, research and explorations of our local teaching context as a microcosm of a globalized teaching endeavour. The Department of English came into being in June 2011 with the establishment of five departments by MGS University. The department, within a short span of time, has acquired a name for its teaching, research and extension activities. The department conducts classroom seminars and intends to hold lecture series by eminent scholars to keep up the vibrancy. The department also looks forwards to interactive and inter disciplinary paradigms in English studies. Presently the department has one Professor and three Assistant Professors. The English Language Teaching Institute (ELTI), Bikaner, a state Institute established by the Government of Rajasthan and Sponsored by ELTISS, English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad came into existence in December 2010. The Institute provides opportunity to the teachers to grow professionally by focusing on innovative techniques, methods and approaches of teaching. It also seeks to help the teachers to acquire new skills to meet the changing needs of the learners, to develop reflective practitioners with their professional values and goals, to foster a research- based approach to curriculum development, to empower them to act as change agents in their local contexts to embed communication and information technologies effectively.
