Something to Think About… Look at the photo of this leader ▫Why is this person a leader? ▫If you were following a person into a dangerous wilderness for a five day hike, what qualities would you want in this person?

What is Leadership ? Leadership is the skill or ability to encourage people to work together and do their best to achieve common goals

Leaders… Develop by their own efforts, not born Combine visions of excellence with ability to inspire others Promote positive changes that benefit their professions and the people they serve Can be ANYONE Every member of a group who makes a contribution is a leader

Characteristics of a Leader Respect rights, dignity, opinions, and abilities of others Understands principles of democracy Works with a group to guide the group towards a goal Understands own strengths and weaknesses

Categories of Leaders Leaders in these categories develop based on their involvement Any individual who joins a club or organization may become a leader when the group elects the individual to an office or position of leadership Examples Religious Political Club Business Community Expertise Peer

Democratic Encourages participation of all individuals in decisions that have to be made or problems that have to be solves Listens to opinions of others and bases decisions on what is best for the group Guides the individuals to a solution so the group can take responsibility for the decision

Laissez- Faire More of an informal type of leader Strives for minimal rules or regulations Allows the individuals in a group to function in an independent manner Has “hands off” policy and handles decision only when forced to Term Laissez-Faire comes from French idiom meaning “to let alone”

Autocratic Often called a dictator Maintains total rule, makes all decisions, and has difficulty delegating or sharing duties Seldom asks opinions of others, emphasizes discipline, and expects others to follow directions at all times Individuals follow this leader because of fear of punishment or an extreme loyalty

Summary All types of leadership have advantages and disadvantages In some rare situations an autocratic leader may be beneficial Democratic leader usually presented as most effective for group interactions Respecting the rights and opinions of others is an important guide for a leader
