How does the respiratory system functions? the breath enters the nasal cavity passes through the pharynx then over the larynx the epiglottis covers the opening to the larynx when food passes through the pharynx and keeps it from entering the larynx ( voice box) the air enters the bronchi which soon splits to right left and the air enters the bronchioles and travels to the alveoli where there is a gas exchange.

Interesting Facts 1. We breathe 13 pints of air a minute. 2. Each lung contains 300-350 million respiratory units called alveoli making it a total of 700 million in both lungs. 3. More than half a litre of water per day is lost through breathing. 4. People under 30 years of age take in double the amount of oxygen in comparison to a 80 year old. 5. Yawning brings more oxygen to the lungs.

SMOKING! While nicotine has effects on blood flow, these effects are not as significant as the damage to the lung and irritation of the air passages to the lung. One such problem is "smoker's cough", caused by damage to the epithelia of the windpipe. Emphysema caused by the body's immune response to cigarette smoke causes a major loss in lung function and debilitating disease.
