Jambo Jipya School & Orphanage – A New Beginning This is Kenya 700 miles from Nairobi there is a coastal village on the Indian Ocean called Mtwapa The capital city of Kenya is Nairobi

Jambo Jipya School & Orphanage – A New Beginning It is estimated that there are in excess of 700 ‘street kids’ in Mtwapa…. …they have nothing and they have no future But some will find Jambo Jipya with your help.

Jambo Jipya School & Orphanage – A New Beginning Jambo Jipya School was established in 1999 by a nurse, Christine Mwende In 2004, there was one mud hut and 20 pupils, mostly orphans

Jambo Jipya School & Orphanage – A New Beginning Now there are 307 pupils…. ….of which 205 are orphans. 35 pupils live-in.

Jambo Jipya School & Orphanage – A New Beginning - The local authority insisted that the orphans were housed in proper accommodation - This is a rented secure orphanage that is a quarter of a mile from the school - It houses 35 orphans at present, with room for 10 more - The additional ground rent is £307 per month

Jambo Jipya School & Orphanage – A New Beginning Jambo Jipya employs 16 teachers and 18 support staff Salaries range from £43 to £143 per month

Jambo Jipya School & Orphanage – A New Beginning The total cost of running the school is $5,000 per month Including rent, salaries, food and medical support There is no government support Jambo Jipya is a private school where 10% of the students are fee-paying. 30 pupils pay KS1000 per month ($10) because they have parents or relatives that can afford to do so. This contributes to less than 10% of the running costs

Jambo Jipya School & Orphanage – A New Beginning Jambo Jipya is reliant on donations to support over 90% of the running costs The majority of funding comes from a charitable foundation in the USA called “Reasons To Smile” In 2010, Reasons To Smile donated a additional funds to support the building of 3 new classrooms These new classrooms are for the new secondary school

Jambo Jipya School & Orphanage – A New Beginning All pupils get two meals per day and a cup of sweet tea. The boarders get an extra evening meal

Jambo Jipya School & Orphanage – A New Beginning Although the pupils are multi-faith, the school promotes Christian values. Lessons are taught in English with an additional lesson in Swahili Jambo Jipya is one of 53 schools in the Kilifi district of Kenya In spite of all the disadvantages posed to the children, in 2010, Jambo Jipya school was ranked 11 th out of the 53 schools in the district
