Where is Easter Island? Easter Island is a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific ocean. Mark it on your map on at stick it into your book. How important are resources to island people?

These statues are all over Easter Island and are know as Moai. They are said to be the living faces of the islanders dead ancestors. They gaze inland looking over the island. How important are resources to island people?

5 What caused a civil war to break out on this remote island?
Use the cards to solve the mystery question above. Work in pairs to figure out what happened. The clues are in the cards, some may be more helpful than others! How important are resources to island people?

6 Easter Island Timeline
First settlers arrived Population grew with abundance of resources Fishing in dug out canoes and catamarans. Tribal rituals meant that different statues (Moai) were carved out which represented the dead ancestors of the islanders. Population rose to 15,000 before resources run out. Civil war broke out and tribes sought refuge in the lava tubes. Population declined down to 2,000 and the last remaining islanders were able to live of the few crops that were left. Watch this video from 5.28 to hear a bit more about the island. How important are resources to island people?

Task: Easter Island Create a story board on page 19 of your passport to show what happened on Easter Island. Be imaginative and use lots of different ideas to show how the islands population has changed over time. How important are resources to island people?

8 Easter Island Homework
Imagine you are on holiday on Easter Island with your family. Write a postcard back to a friend telling them what you have seen and what it is like. Try to include a picture of the island too. How important are resources to island people?
