Hoa Hakananai’a dates around 1200 CE One of only 14 moai made from basalt Rock sparkles with tiny crystals, difficult to carve - unforgiving All others carved from islands volcanic tuff Adoption of Christianity in 1860, remaining standing moai were toppled Backs to the sea – keeping watch over the island, head slightly tilted back (scanning horizon) Eyes were inlaid with red stones & coral Originally painted with red & white designs
