Spirit Rallies 5 All School Spirit Rallies Per Year 1. Beginning of the year kick off! 2. End of 1 st Quarter 3. End of 2 nd Quarter 4. End of 3 rd Quarter 5. End of the year 5 th Grade Farewell…always held on the last day of school!
4
Beginning of the Year Kick Off This is where we get students and staff excited about the school year. We want the school climate to be positive. We introduce any new staff (last year our music teacher taught them a dance to a popular tune and they danced in silly outfits!) We throw out a challenge/contest for the next rally End with a game/activity (see slide with our games/activities)
5
End of 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd quarter rallies Most rallies follow a similar format: Begin with a rah-rah kick off cheer Announce any winners from previous assets challenges/contests Show recognition video of students and staff End with a game/activity/challenge/contest or fundraiser announcement
6
Rah-Rah Kick off Cheer! Important to get kids excited! Tie cheers to upcoming themes/holidays (red ribbon week, etc.) Use students to kick us off Had a “cheer off” where each grade level was in charge of leading their grade to a short cheer and voted who was the loudest!

Fundraisers/Service learning Coin wars (w/ Ezra): always during Unit Way drive. We have a contest with Ezra. Whoever raises most money, the other principal wears opposing school gear and there is a traveling trophy. How to: Every classroom has a plastic jug. For 4 min. at the beginning of the day for 4 consecutive days students race around the school and dump $ in other class buckets! Goal NOT to get $ in your bucket. Class who has least amt. of $ gets ice cream party. Resource: “An Asset Builder’s Guide to Service Learning”, A Search Institute Publication

Fundraisers/Service Learning Ronald McDonald House: We collected pop tabs all quarter. We weighed each class’ tabs at a 40 Assets rally and the class that weighed the most won donut/juice party. The SBSP classrooms took a field trip and delivered tabs to the Omaha Ronald McDonald House and received a guided tour.
9
Fundraisers/Service Learning Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation: A representative came out and did a kickoff rally with us. She brought a “side kick” with her which was a person in a big blow up shoe which the kids got a kick out of. Kids raised money for our walk-for-the-cure. We then presented the money we earned to the representative at our next rally. She gave the winning class an ice cream party.
10
Fundraisers/Service Learning Humane Society: Again, we made a contest of what class could raise the most money. At our 40 Asset rally we announced the winning class. The Humane Society gave us a huge list of items they were in need of. Each class got this list and circled the items they wanted to buy with the money they raised. We then went shopping for these items. Our SBSP class took a field trip to deliver items. We got an excellent behind the scenes tour and they let us sponsor a kennel (usually costs $5,000). We bought a brick and put Holling’s name on it and it is out front of Humane Society.
11
Fundraisers/Service Learning Pennies for Patients: Collect pennies and change all quarter. At our 40 Assets spirit rally we did “stuck for a buck”. We charged $1 for a piece of duck tape let students duck tape our principal to the wall. All money went to Pennies for Patients.
12
Fundraisers/Service Learning Food Bank of the Heartland: Raised # for the food bank. A man from the food bank came out and we submitted him with a large check and he spoke to the school.
13
Contests/Challenges: 40 Assets Activity Sheets: We assigned an activity sheet for 5 different assets per quarter. If students performed the activity/activities and turned them in, they earned a button. They got a sticker for every asset activity they completed up to 5 per quarter. We posted all activity sheets on 5 different bulletin boards in front of school. Each quarter the activities were changed. We addressed 20 assets that year. Buttons were handed out at the rallies. Resource for activity sheets: “Building Assets is Elementary Group Activities for Helping Kids Ages 8-12 Succeed” by Search Institute.
14
Contests/Challenges: Bulletin board contests (per grade level): Each grade level is assigned a bulletin board in our front lobby. They choose an asset at our rally and must design board around that asset. The bulletin boards must use student work, be interactive and sometimes we required them to be 3-D. Our entire school votes on their favorite board and the winning grade level gets donut/juice party.
15
Contests/Challenges: We challenged entire school to memorize all 40 assets. We will showcase those students/staff who accomplish this at next 40 Assets rally.
16
Contests/Challenges: Challenge 5 th graders to learn all they can about Holling school and staff. We put up posters all around school with facts and at last spirit rally had a game show between 5 th graders and staff to see who knew more Holling trivia. Red Ribbon Week door decorating contest Red Ribbon Week book club…comparable to the birthday book club, red ribbon stamp was put in the book with a $5 donation
17
Contests/Challenges: Red Ribbon Week door decorating contest: We challenged any class or room that has a door to decorate it with the Red Ribbon Theme. We passed out ballots to entire school and voted on favorite door. Winning class won a popcorn party. Red Ribbon Week book club: It is comparable to the birthday book club where a red ribbon stamp was put in the book with any $5 donation.
18
Recognition Video This is the highlight of all rallies! Each grade level must submit a name of a student who demonstrates a commitment to the 40 assets and can be a role model for others. Teachers must video a creative way to showcase that student to surprise them at a rally. Parents of these students are invited to the rally. We also highlight a certified and classified staff member as well. Their pictures are put on a bulletin board up front all quarter long.
19
Additional Recognition Picnic in the Pit – On a daily basis students were given tickets as they were caught demonstrating assets. Their ticket was put in a box. At the end of the month names were drawn for a special picnic in the pit. Parents and families were invited as well.
20
Drama Plays performed: Both staff and students have performed plays from the book, “Character Education Book of Plays” by Judy Truesdell Mecca. It took a lot of time to plan, organize and practice the student led plays. Students gave up many recesses to be in the plays. They loved being a part of it and have asked to do more!
21
End of Year Rally – 5 th Grade Farewell The focus is on our 5 th Graders 5 th graders enter gym to “Pomp and Circumstance” 5 th graders are in the spotlight using a game show format. “Minute to Win It”: Used the NBC website to get the challenges and had 5 th graders vs. staff. “Jeopardy”: Challenged 5 th graders to learn all they could about Holling school and staff. Posters were put up all around school with these facts and they took on staff in “Jeopardy”. Wii: “dance off”: 5 th graders vs. staff Clap Out: K-4 students and staff line the halls and 5 th grade parades around entire school while being applauded. We do this with “NE tunnel song” playing in the background.
