10 What a Graph Needs Before you get started on plotting your data your graph needs the following: A title Both of the axis need titles complete with UNITS!! Evenly spaced intervals between number values on the x and y axis

11 Main Title for your Graph Graph Title The title should be very descriptive. Titles on graphs are more like sentences A good way to lay out your graph title is to start with… “The Effect that _____________ has on _____________” You can get the info to fill in the blanks from the problem you identified EXAMPLE “IF” I add fertilizer to my lawn, “THAN” the grass will grow twice as long in one week Title should be something like… THE EFFECT THAT adding fertilizer HAS ON the length that the grass grows in one week

12 Variables & Axis on the Graph It is important to know which variable is which when it comes to graphing your data? Depending on which variable you are talking about will affect which axis that variable will be presented on in the graph. The MANIPULATED VARIABLE will always be put on the X-AXIS The RESPONDING VARIABLE will always be put on the Y-AXIS

13 Titles for the X & Y Axis X & Y Axis Titles Both of the axis need titles The titles must be complete with units!!!! When creating increments on your axis for numbers it is important to remember that the increments must be evenly spaced (USE GRAPH PAPER IF YOU CAN) Why is it important to have evenly spaced number values along the axis? NOTE The graph should be able to stand alone and the reader should still be able to understand what the experiment was about

14 Always a Line Graph Line Graphs For the purposes of our grade 8 class, we will always be plotting our data using a line graph

15 Plotting a Graph as a Class This test consisted of feeding lab rats different amounts of protein bars each day. The rats were all fed different amounts of the same type of bar for 15 weeks from birth. They were then weighed to check for overall body mass. 20 Extrapolating Info From a Graph Look at the graph below, I want you to tell me (and record in your note books) what the test was about, what the responding variable was, what the manipulated variable was, and what the Conclusion might be?

22 The Curve of the Graph The curve or shape of the data after it has been plotted is important If the data spikes, if it is a strait line, if it levels off after rising… all of this is important to note in your conclusion Visualize what the curve is saying about that data and then explain it in your analysis
