32 Ten Tips for Tutoring Your supervisors and a team of academic professionals answered a survey about the top things they want you to know as a tutor. 1.You are important to SLCC and the department you work for. 2.Be friendly and welcoming; panicky students need reassurance. 3.Your students may be intimidated by you; don’t talk down to them. 4.Do not make assumptions about students. Always treat students with respect. 5.You are responsible for the process not the outcome. Remind the student that she/he must follow through if tutoring is to be of value.

33 Ten Tips for Tutoring cont… 6.Let the student know you care. Get to know the student(s). Find out the student(s)’ concerns in the class. 7.Explain that you won’t do homework but you will work with the student to understand the material. Have the student do the work. 8.Ask clarifying questions to check understanding. Don’t accept “I understand” as evidence of clarity. 9.Make sure the student has steps or processes neatly written in their notebook to keep, not on scratch paper. 10.Know your limits and rely on your colleagues. Get help in a session when you need it. You don’t have to be an expert in the content to tutor. You do need to be resourceful.

34 Section 4: Final assignment The final assignment is an essay or series of journals. Please use the assignment designated for your location. It may take several days to complete according to your assigned tasks. Contact your supervisor or Christie Bogle with questions.

35 Thanks for watching.
