3 What units are we doing.....? MP (Mandatory Pathway) - Units 22, 24 – 30, 51 – 54 EYMP (Early Years Mandatory Pathway) – Units 64 – 68 Optional units to be decided with your Assessor and can be added at a later date Mandatory units = MP 27 + EYMP 22 Optional units = Minimum of 16 credits This will equal a minimum total of 65 credits

6 Unit 28 Positive Relationships Aim; This unit aims to enable the learner to understand and practice the skills required to develop positive relationships with children, young people and carers. Learning outcomes The learner will: 1. Be able to develop positive relationships with children and young people 2. Be able to build positive relationships with people involved in the care of children and young people Aims and Objectives

7 Because: it is a requirement of the EYFS it is essential for children’s development it can improve your practice it improves your relationship with the parent and their child every child matters! Why bother? Developing Positive Relationships

8 Parental Partnerships When does the relationship with a parent start? When they leave their child with you? When they come for their first visit? When they look around the setting? In fact, they formed an impression of you and your setting from the way you answered the phone and responded to their first enquiry.

9 Positive Relations How do you make your environment welcoming?

10 There are so many ways that a setting could develop its relationship with parents and the majority of these will cost nothing but time. You are only limited by your imagination! Think outside the box! Positive Relations Either in small groups or pairs discuss ideas for working in partnership with parents. 12 Aims and Objectives Unit 68, Speech and Language Development Aim The unit aims to provide a basis for understanding the importance of speech, language and communication for a child’s overall development and explores the ways in which those working with children can support the development of speech, language and communication skills. Learning outcomes The learner will: 1. Understand the importance of speech, language and communication for children’s overall development 2. Understand the importance and the benefits of adults supporting the speech, language and communication development of the children in own setting 3. Be able to provide support for the speech, language and communication development of the children in own setting 4. Be able to contribute to maintaining a positive environment that supports speech, language and communication.

15 Case Study Asa is four years old. She was born with a cleft palate and intermittently loses her hearing as a result of glue ear. She often appears to be in a world of her own and has a very short attention span. She has difficulties in pronouncing sounds and words and, at nursery, her key person finds it difficult to understand what she is saying and what her needs are. This leads to Asa becoming frustrated and sometimes she throws herself on the floor in anger.  Describe how Asa’s speech, language and communication difficulties might impact upon her overall development. - Describe both the current and long-term impact.  How might a practitioner support Asa to minimise the impact of her difficulties?
