4/25 Warm-up What 2 things happens to the temperature as you move from the equator to the poles? 1. The temperature gets colder. 2. The range of temperature gets broader (larger range). Week 11

Graph the annual temperature of your two cities on a piece of graph paper in your science journal (just like you did for latitude.) Make sure to: Label your graphs appropriately (title, axis titles, key, etc)

Singapore, Malaya 1°N 104°E Calcutta, India 23°N 88°E Washington, D.C. 39°N 77°E Moscow, U.S.S.R. 56°N 37°E January27192-11 February27223-9 March27268-4 April2829133 May28301812 June27292317 July27292619 August27282417 September27282111 October27 144 November27239-2 December27193-8 Annual Mean2726144 Range1112430

Answer the following questions on the backside. USE COMPLETE SENTENCES. 2. Geographically, what is different about your cities? 3. They are both in very similar latitudes. Why do you think there is such a large difference between the two? 1. For your pair of cities, What is the difference between their temperature? Which city has a higher temperature? The lowest? Which has a higher range?

Find a partner with different cities. Write down your new cities. 4. Which of their cities had higher temperature and range? 5. Where were they located? 6. Is there a pattern between the temperatures between your pair of cities and your partners cities even though they were in different locations?

7. Come up with an idea why the coastal temperatures were more moderate, and the inland temperatures were more extreme.

4/26 Warm-up Why do you think cities that are near the coast have more moderate temperatures? Give an example. Responsibilities: Quiz Friday!

7. Come up with an idea why the coastal temperatures were more moderate, and the inland temperatures were more extreme.

Copy the following data table into your Journal TimeWaterDark Sand 021.0 2 4 6 8 10 Heat capacity of Sand and Water

Heating of sand and water Draw the apparatus at the front of the room. Make a prediction of what will happen to each of the beakers.

Copy the following data table into your Journal TimeWaterDark Sand 021 2 4 6 8 10 Heat capacity of Sand and Water

Copy the following data table into your Journal TimeWaterDark Sand 021 221.522 421.523 62223.5 82224.5 102225 122226 Heat capacity of Sand and Water

Heating of sand and water Together with your table partner, Write a conclusion about what happened to the sand and water.

The city inland has more extreme temperatures Water makes climate more mild. Water takes a very long time to heat or cool

Specific Heat The specific heat is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1gram of a substance by 1°C. Water = 4.18j/g Land =.84 What does that mean? It takes almost 5x as much energy to increase the temp of water

Math… If you inserted 100j (energy) into a gram of water… 100j x 1g / 4.18 = Increase 24°C

If you inserted the same amount of energy into land… 100j x 1g /.84j/gC = Increase 119.0°C

Winter Water gives off all of energy it has… Sad ocean… (just depleted its energy)

Spring Sun starts to heat up land… The land wants to heat up… But Greedy ocean takes the energy…

Summer Ocean keeps taking in that energy… (its charging)

Fall Time to give back!!! Land cools off REALLY fast.

Quick write Explain how a body of water can act like a “climate battery” Remember places by the water will have a cooler summer and warmer winter.

Think of the ocean like a rechargeable climate battery In the summer the ocean stores energy… In winter it releases it. Places by the ocean will have cooler summers and warmer winters. January temp is 45 July temp is 53 The energy stored in the ocean regulates climate to make it less extreme
