4 Repeated neglect of ones responsibilities Deterioration in academic performance Problems with attendance or truancy Change in peer group Decreasing involvement in extracurricular activities Fighting/verbal abuse Defiance or withdrawal Legal problems Weight gain or loss Gravitate toward music and dress that depict alcohol/drugs Need for money (Fisher & Harrison, 2009)

5 Use is the ingestion of alcohol or other drugs (AOD) without experiencing any negative consequences Misuse is when a person experiences negative consequences from the use of AOD Abuse is the continual use of AOD in spite of negative consequences Addiction or dependence is the compulsive use of AOD regardless of the consequences (Fisher & Harrison, 2009) Referral information is available

6 Survey Team: MN Department of Education, Health, Human Services and Public Safety Students in grades 6, 9, & 12 are surveyed every three years Participation is voluntary Owatonna students that completed surveys Grade 9 328 students (total student count 395) Grade 12 217 students (total student count 362)

12 Chemical use committee has been formed at OHS Referral sheet has been created with local resources Signs and symptoms sheet and procedure for office referral has been created and will be shared with staff at the next staff meeting Random bag and locker checks will occur Drug dogs will be used Building a connection with the Steele County Safe and Drug Free Coalition and parent group Creation of student support group Researching athletic/extracurricular policies
