Bellwork!! It has been said the invention of photography has changed art more than any other invention. Citing examples, explain this statement. Be sure to discuss the evolution of photography as a technology and as an accepted art form. Who were the primary contributors to both?

Chapter 12 Sculpture

Freestanding Sculpture Also known as sculpture in the round. Meant to be viewed from all sides. C.F.A.O by Martin Puryear

Relief Sculpture Not free standing Apollo Projects from a background Low relief (bas-relief) the projection from the surface is slight.

Relief Sculpture High relief: more than half the natural circumference of the form projects from the background. Corporate Wars: Walls of Influence by Robert Longo

Methods and Materials There are five traditional methods of making sculpture. Modeling Casting Carving Constructing Assembling Or a combination of these methods

Modeling Additive process Pliable material (clay, wax or plaster) is built up, removed or pushed into a final form. Often built on a rigid inner support called an armature.

Casting Allows the artist to make a work in an easily handled material and reproducing the work in a more permanent material. Substitution process I would know the steps of the lost wax casting process.

Carving Taking away unwanted material to form a sculpture. Subtractive process. The most challenging of the three basic sculptural techniques. I would know the characteristics of different types of stone. (marble, granite, sandstone/limestone) What are the most preferable woods for carving?

Constructing and Assembling Sculpture made by assembling found or cast-off objects. Sometimes called a found object sculpture. Julio Gonzalez pioneered the use of the welding torch for cutting and welding metal sculptures. (I would know everything about him.)

Picasso Bull’s Head

Kinetic Sculpture Sculpture that moves First explored by Alexander Calder Also called mobiles

Installation and Site Specific Art Transforming a specific space into a work of art by bringing in items of symbolic significance. Site specific works are intended for particular locations. If they are created in the “great outdoors” they are called earthworks or land art.
