CONCENTRATION AND DILUTIONS
2
Concentrations of Solutions ■a dilute solution contains only a small amount of solute ■concentrated solution contains a large amount of solute ■This is very vague, but we can quantify it!
3
Section 3: Concentration of Solutions ■Concentration: Is a measure of the amount of solute in a given amount of solvent or solution ■Molarity (M): is the number of moles of solute in one liter of solution M= amount of solute (mol) volume of solution (L)
4
Why is knowing the concentration of a solution important? ■Fish need a certain amount of oxygen dissolved in water to live. ■Amount of chlorine to add to a pool ■Amount of anesthesia to give to a patient before surgery
5
Practice 1. What would the molarity of a solution that has.500 moles of solute in 750 mL 2. What is the molarity of a solution that has 1.3 moles of solute in 200 mL of solution?
6
3. A solution is made by dissolving 26. 42 grams of NaCl in.50 L of solution. What is the molarity of the solution?
7
4. What is the molarity of a solution that contains 56.4 grams of AlPO 4 in 0.98 Liters of solution?
