NEWBORN SCREENING SAVE YOUR BABY from MENTAL RETARDATION ZHALLENE MICHELLE E. SANCHEZ
2
WHAT IS NEWBORN SCREENING? NEWBORN SCREENING (NBS) is a simple procedure to find out if your baby has a congenital metabolic disorder that may lead to mental retardation or even death if left untreated.
3
WHY IS NEWBORN SCREENING IMPORTANT? Most babies with metabolic disorders look ‘normal ’ at birth. By doing NBS, metabolic disorders may be detected even before clinical signs and symptoms are present. And as a result of this, treatment can be given early to prevent consequences of untreated conditions.
4
WHEN IS NEWBORN SCREENING DONE? Newborn screening is ideally done on the 48th hour or at least 24 hours from birth. Some disorders are not detected if the test is done earlier than 24 hours. The baby must be screened again after 2 weeks for more accurate results.
5
HOW IS NEWBORN SCREENING DONE? Newborn screening is a simple procedure. Using the heel prick method, a few drops are taken from the baby’s heel and blotted on a special absorbent filter card. The blood is dried for 4 hours and sent to the Newborn Screening Laboratory ( NBS Lab). 7
WHO WILL COLLECT THE SAMPLE FOR NEWBORN SCREENING? The blood sample for NBS may be collected by the following: physician, nurse, medical technologist or trained midwife.
8
WHERE IS NEWBORN SCREENING AVAILABLE? Newborn screening is available in practicing health institutions ( hospitals, lying-ins, Rural Health Units and Health Centers). If babies are delivered at home, babies may be brought to the nearest institution offering newborn screening. 9
WHEN IS NEWBORN SCREENING RESULTS AVAILABLE? Newborn screening results are available within 3 weeks after the NBS Lab receives and tests the samples sent by the institutions. Results are released by NBS Lab to the institutions and are released to your attending birth attendants or physicians. Parents may seek the results from the institution where samples are collected.
10
WHEN IS NEWBORN SCREENING RESULTS AVAILABLE? A negative screen mean that the result of the test is normal and the baby is not suffering from any of the disorders being screened. In case of a positive screen, the NBS nurse coordinator will immediately inform the coordinator of the institution where the sample was collected for recall of patients for confirmatory testing.
11
WHEN IS NEWBORN SCREENING RESULTS AVAILABLE? What should be done when a baby has a positive newborn screening result? Babies with positive results should be referred at once to the nearest hospital or specialist for confirmatory test and further management. Should there be no specialist in the are, the NBS secretariat office will assist its attending physician.
12
WHAT ARE THE DISORDERS INCLUDED IN THE PHILIPPINE NEWBORN SCREENING PROGRAM? Currently, there are five disorders being screened, These are: 1. CONGENITAL HYPOTHYROIDISM (CH) 2.CONGENITAL ADRENAL HYPERPLASIA (CAH) 3.GALACTOSEMIA (GAL) 4.PHENYLKETONURIA (PKU) 5. GLUCOSE-6-PHOSPHATE DEHYDROGENASE DEFICIENCY (G6PD DEF)
13
WHAT ARE THE DISORDERS INCLUDED IN THE PHILIPPINE NEWBORN SCREENING PROGRAM? CONGENITAL HYPOTHYROIDISM (CH) CH results from lack or absence of thyroid hormose which is essential for the physical and mental development of a child. If the disorder is not detected and hormone replacement is not initiated within two (2) weeks, the baby with CH may suffer from growth and mental retardation
14
WHAT ARE THE DISORDERS INCLUDED IN THE PHILIPPINE NEWBORN SCREENING PROGRAM? CONGENITAL ADRENAL HYPERPLASIA (CAH) CAH is an endocrine disorder that causes severe salt loss, dehydration and abnormally high levels of male sex hormones. In both boys and girls. If not detected and treated early, babies with CAH may die within 7-14 days.
15
WHAT ARE THE DISORDERS INCLUDED IN THE PHILIPPINE NEWBORN SCREENING PROGRAM? GALACTOSEMIA (GAL) GAL is a condition in which babies are unable to process galactosse, the sugar present in milk. Accumulation of excessive galactose in the body can cause many problems, including liver damage, brain damage and cataracts.
16
WHAT ARE THE DISORDERS INCLUDED IN THE PHILIPPINE NEWBORN SCREENING PROGRAM? PHENYLKETONURIA (PKU) PKU is a rare condition in which the baby cannot properly use one of the building blocks of protein called phenylalanine. Excessive accumulation of phenylalanine in the blood causes brain damage.
17
WHAT ARE THE DISORDERS INCLUDED IN THE PHILIPPINE NEWBORN SCREENING PROGRAM? GLUCOSE-6-PHOSPHATE DEHYDROGENASE DEFICIENCY (G6PD DEF) G6PD deficiency is a condition where the body lacks the enzyme called G6PD. Babies with this deficiency may have hemolytic anemia resulting form exposure to oxidative substances found in drugs, foods, and chemicals
18
REMINDER TO PARENTS G6PD def is the most common condition among the NBS Panel of Disorders. Napthalene or moth balll, and some drugs including herbal medicine, should be avoided by people with G6PD def. While waiting for the NBS result, parents are advised not to exposed their baby to napthalene or moth balls. More so, all medications that will be given to the baby must be prescribed by a doctor. If the NBS result is G6PD def. Consult the baby’s doctor and proceed with the confirmatory test. Refer the result to your physician.
