The Gothic style came to Spain as a result of European influence in the 12th century when late Romanesque alternated with few expressions of pure Gothic architecture, the Cathedral of Avila. The Gothic arrived with full force to the Camino de Santiago in the 13th century, with some of the purest Gothic cathedrals, German and French i+nfluence: the cathedrals of Burgos, León and Toledo.

Isabelline Gothic, created during the time of Ferdinand and Isabella, was part of the transition to Renaissance architecture, but it was also a strong resistance to the Italian Renaissance style. Highlights of the style are San Juan de los Reyes in Toledo and the Royal Chapel of Granada.

Gothic architecture is a style of architecture which flourished during the high and late Middle Ages. It evolved from Romanesque architecture and was succeeded by Renaissance architecture.

 Originating in 12th century in France and lasting into the 16th century, Gothic architecture was known during the period as "the French Style" (Opus Francigenum) with the term Gothic first appeared during the latter part of the Renaissance. Its characteristic features are the pointed arch, the vault and the flying buttress.

Gothic architecture is most familiar as the architecture of many of the great cathedrals, abbeys and churches of Europe. It is also the architecture of many castles, palaces, town halls, unions, universities and less prominent, private homes.

A series of Gothic revivals began in mid-18th century England, spread to Europe from the 19th century and continued in much of the ecclesiastical and university structures, in the 20th century.

Gothic architecture grew out of previous architectural genre, Romanesque. For the most part, there was a rupture, as there was to be in Florence during the Renaissance with the revival of the classic style by Brunelleschi in the 15th century
