1 With your topic create a poster. Include 1. A brief description of the topic 2. Come up with a slogan that represents your topic. (You may not use a historical slogan. Example: Cotton is King!) 15 minutes then we will share!

2 Objective: Students will understand the major reform movements during the age of Andrew Jackson.

3  Andrew Jackson gets 43% of votes  John Quincy Adams gets 30.5% of votes  Henry Clay gets 13.2 % of votes  William Crawford gets 13.1% of votes  No One gets the majority of votes  The House of Representatives must decide between top two

4  Clay make a deal with Adams  John Quincy Adams becomes the 6 th President and appoints Henry Clay as Secretary of State  Andrew Jackson calls the deal a “corrupt bargain”

7 Jackson’s followers split from the Democratic-Republicans New Parties  National Republicans (Whigs)  Democratic-Republican Party- Jacksonian Democrats (forerunner for Democratic Party)

8 Jackson appealed to the common man because of his humble beginnings. Jackson was a self-made man. Jackson believed that the common man was capable of uncommon achievements.

9  More people voted in 1828 because of less property restrictions White males were able to vote Free African-Americans and Women could NOT vote  Jackson practiced the spoils system incoming officials throw-out the old appointees and replace them with friends

12  Jackson’s Plan- remove Natives off land for American settlement  Indian Removal Act of 1830- Native Americans moved to Oklahoma  Worchester v. Georgia (1832)- Court ruled that Georgia could not regulate Cherokee or invade their lands

13  President Jackson responded- “John Marshall has made his decision, now let him enforce it!”  Jackson orders the US army to relocate the Native Americans to Oklahoma = Trail of Tears

16  Tariff of Abominations (Tariff of 1828)-Forced the South to buy expensive Northern goods Increased taxes on US goods in 1824 & again in 1828- every four years  John C. Calhoun- Vice-president- argued that South Carolina could nullify the tariff law Threatened that SC would secede from the Union

17  VP Calhoun resigns in 1832  SC nullified the tariffs  Jackson passes Force Bill (1833)- the use of federal army and navy against SC to enforce laws  Henry Clay proposes a plan to lower the tariff over the next 10 years- no military action at this time

20  President Jackson did not support the Bank of the United States Federal tax revenues deposited in bank & elite collected money off of the interest (on the gov’t) Called it a “monster”  Jackson does not renew charter of bank Just another Philadelphia bank 5 years later goes out of business

21 Pet banks- term for state banks selected by the US Department of Treasury to receive surplus government funds in 1833.

22  Created out of anger from Jackson’s tactics and policies  Whigs core beliefs Supported the American System Wanted a protective tariff Wanted to expand roads and canals Wanted trade within the US Wanted a federal controlled national bank National accepted currency

24  Martin Van Buren is elected because Whigs had 3 candidates

25  Pet banks- printed tons of paper money  Specie- gold & silver currency (not paper)  People rushed banks to trade paper money for gold & silver Banks did not have enough Banks forced to close People panicked  Van Buren blamed for crisis

26  William Henry Harrison (Whig) defeats Van Buren & dies in office  Vice President John Tyler Takes over “His Accidency”
