2 Agree or Disagree…..??? 1- 4 and 5 year olds usually express their anger by hitting other children. 2- Many 4 and 5 year olds begin losing their teeth. 3- Imaginary playmates are normal among 4 and 5 year olds. 5- Children learn to use irregular verbs during the preschool stage.

3 6- Asking children to be a helper builds their self-esteem. 7-4 and 5 year olds prefer to have friends of the same gender. 8- Preschoolers tend to take literally statements that have more than one meaning. 9- Asking questions is a way children try to make sense of their world. 10- 4 and 5 year old may become reckless in working to improve their physical skills.

7 5 year olds continued…. Like to bring favorite toys to center Call attention to their own clothing Know difference between right and left Use lively and interesting language Carry on lengthy conversations Repeat details of stories Are eager to please Like to run errands

8 Suggestions for talking with a child… -Get down at eye level and as close to his/her ears as possible Maintain eye contact with the child throughout the conversation Be interested in the child Provide honest answers to the child’s questions Use reminders rather than questions when children forget or refuse to follow directions.

9 Say the obvious Everything has a name. Use it. Put the child’s feeling into words. Use new word over and over again. Take a child’s short response and put it back into a whole sentence. Use a variety of sentence forms. Expand the child’s thoughts by adding more information.

10 Make statements that will encourage. Praise children for their efforts as well as accomplishments. Explain the anticipated consequences of specific behaviors. Speak distinctly and use correct grammar. Ask open-ended questions Provide clear directions and patience when handling transitions. Call the child by name every day
