Suggestions for talking with a child… -Get down at eye level and as close to his/her ears as possible Maintain eye contact with the child throughout the conversation Be interested in the child Provide honest answers to the child’s questions Use reminders rather than questions when children forget or refuse to follow directions.

9. Say the obvious Everything has a name. Use it. Put the child’s feeling into words. Use new word over and over again. Take a child’s short response and put it back into a whole sentence. Use a variety of sentence forms. Expand the child’s thoughts by adding more information.

10. Make statements that will encourage. Praise children for their efforts as well as accomplishments. Explain the anticipated consequences of specific behaviors. Speak distinctly and use correct grammar. Ask open-ended questions Provide clear directions and patience when handling transitions. Call the child by name every day
