Science and Appropriate Technology Center for Developing Countries: A New Initiative at Baylor Walter L. Bradley Distinguished Professor of Engineering Baylor University
2
What is meant by Appropriate Technology for Developing Countries? Will make people’s life demonstrably better Inexpensive Simple to operate Easy to maintain Will not create more unemployment Acceptable to people for whom it is intended Can be manufactured in country if possible
3
Can you give me an example?
4
Can you give me a second example? Drilling wells around the world Contaminated water is greatest health hazard in the world Shallow wells are often contaminated as is surface water Former oil driller took early retirement to develop simple, portable water drilling equipment for 150 ft. deep wells Need to replace steel casings with some plastic pipe that can be made in-country
5
How about one more example? Inexpensive, reliable, and safe way to look for land mines to be able to reclaim land that lies fallow now for fear of land mines Use of a snake like device that has suitable sensors to go on a search without tripping mines Must be useable in wooded areas as well as in shallow marshes Idea contributed by Ian Gravagne
6
I’m From Missouri—Just one more Very inexpensive prosthetic legs and arms Legs for less than $100 that are easy to attach ASU professor has developed a prosthetic arm about $10 that had be applied and removed without even using a screwdriver
7
Where is place for science in such a center? Building materials for homes based on raw materials available in developing countries Uganda
8
How can we identify such projects? Partner with Christian and humanitarian relief organizations like World Vision and with government agencies Network with missionary agencies around the world (e.g., Southern Baptist, Catholic World Relief) Partner with Christian faculty in developing parts of the world
9
How could such projects be financed? US Aid United Nations World Bank Private Foundations Relief Agencies Like World Vision NSF
10
What departments at Baylor might be interested in participating? Engineering Computer Science Business/Entrepreneurship Environmental Science Anthropology???????? Physics Biology Chemistry
11
How about other schools? Christian Colleges around the country Possibly professors from other universities Senior design projects as well as MS thesis
12
Would students be interested? Would provide discipline specific missions trip opportunities for engineering students at Baylor Christian graduate students or post-docs who want to help their own countries would get a more appropriate preparation (Nigerian student at Union University, John Puwma) Would provide excellent training in product development and deployment and combine engineering, business and Christian concerns in a neat way
13
How do we get started? Two-day workshop in spring 2004 Invite experienced people from US and abroad to come and share their experiences and give their guidance Include potential sponsors who can give us their agenda and funding priorities at present Include social entrepreneurship and anthropology Funding -- $10,000 from Horizon grants and additional support from various departments
14
Longer term vision Baylor becomes recognized as the premier institution in world for appropriate technology Baylor becomes the networking center for appropriate technology around the world, matching needs in developing countries with technology provides and financial sponsors We help to fulfill Genesis 1:28 in places where there is the most yet to be done
15
Has Baylor Approved Such a Center? No, not yet!!! Center for Science and Appropriate Technology for Developing Countries exists only in my mind. I have discussed this with various people and received very positive feedback First step is to get started on doing some appropriate technology and developing a network. Success will lead naturally to the establishment of a form center. In the meantime, we can function informally as a network on campus
16
Questions What would be best date for workshop? Would you like to participate? Would you be interested in serving on the organizing committee? Do you know of people who should be invited to attend from other universities? Do you know of people who should be invited to speak who have significant experience in this area? How about organizations that work in this area?
