6. 6 Comprehension Turn to page 54 of your reader. Do I have a volunteer to read the paragraph? Remember, a character’s motives are the reasons the character acts as he or she does. A character’s traits can provide clues about the character’s motives. The setting of a story can affect the character’s actions.

Even though her brother disapproved, Amy stilled saddled her pony and went riding. This action shows that Amy is determined to ride. Can anyone identify an action that shows that Amy is strong-willed? I would like for you and your partner to re-read the paragraph and identify how the setting affects Amy’s thoughts and actions.

Sometimes a story’s setting has an effect on the characters and plot events. Thinking about story structure can help readers follow story events.

In the 1930s, girls had few opportunities to play on sports teams. The time in which Dottie lived forced her to be strong, creative, and determined.
