2 RULES : MODAL + HAVE (not) + PAST PARTICIPLE 1.Use should have to express regret for something that happened or did not happened in the past. (feeling sorry) 2. Use may have / might have / could have, to express past possibilities or a past choice. Unit 4 – p. 72 PAST MODALS 2

3 RULES: 1.The subject is DOING the action. EXAMPLE:  The government should have evacuated us earlier.  The flood could have killed our pets.  We might have saved our financial records if we’d had them in a safe. ACTIVE Unit 4 – p. 72 PAST MODALS - ACTIVE VOICE 3

4 RULES: 1.The subject is RECEIVING the action. EXAMPLE:  We should have been evacuated earlier. (who should do it?)  Our pets could have been killed. (killed by who?)  Our financial records might have been saved if we’d had them in a safe. PASSIVE Unit 4 – p. 72 PAST MODALS - PASSIVE VOICE 4
