5 1942 December 1941 - Japan attacked Pearl Harbor - Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, attacked Hong Kong, the Philippines- British, Canadian, and Indian forces could not stop the invasion. Japan also took Burma, Thailand, and Singapore, Guam, and Wake Island.

6 1942 March 1942 - Bataan Death March: –Douglas MacArthur led Filipino and American forces against Japanese. They lost and MacArthur had to leave. His forces were left and forced to march 63 miles up to the prison camps in Bataan Peninsula. They were starved and beaten. 600 Americans and 10,000 Filipinos died.

7 1942 May 1942 – Battle of Coral Sea – The Japanese were unable to take Port Moresby, New Guinea. They would use it as a base for their hoped invasion of Australia. It was named the Battle of Coral Sea.

8 1942 June 4, 1942 - Battle of Midway Nimitz used code breakers to intercept a message about a surprise attack on Midway. He was ready for them and Allied forces won the battle. This severely weakened Japanese naval power because they lost 4 aircraft carriers.
