WHAT HAPPENED?  Nazi Germany broke their Non-Aggression pact with the USSR since they despised Communism.  This was the largest land battle in history.  Soviets put up fierce resistance, despite heavy casualties.  Germans were caught in Russians harsh winter and could not gain a quick victory.  It lasted 3 more years and severely depleted Germany’s troops and equipment. WHAT HAPPENED CONT  On June 22, 1941 Hitler attacked the Soviet Union with 3 million troops and 3000 tanks.  More than 20 million Soviet people lost their lives.  During the 900-day siege of Leningrad alone, around 700,000 civilians died as a result of heavy bombing and starvation. 4. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?  It brought the USSR into the allies.  It was a significant loss for Germany because they had to fight Russia who had joined the allies. (Castano)
