WHAT HAPPENED? Nazi Germany broke their Non-Aggression pact with the USSR since they despised Communism. This was the largest land battle in history. Soviets put up fierce resistance, despite heavy casualties. Germans were caught in Russians harsh winter and could not gain a quick victory. It lasted 3 more years and severely depleted Germany’s troops and equipment. (World War II Outline)

WHAT HAPPENED CONT On June 22, 1941 Hitler attacked the Soviet Union with 3 million troops and 3000 tanks. More than 20 million Soviet people lost their lives. During the 900-day siege of Leningrad alone, around 700,000 civilians died as a result of heavy bombing and starvation. (Coyler et. al)

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? It brought the USSR into the allies. It was a significant loss for Germany because they had to fight Russia who had joined the allies. (Castano)
