LINCS A Vocabulary Strategy

What is an effective learning strategy? How do you study for tests? An effective learning strategy is a systematic plan for learning Includes “thinking smart” Uses a set of thinking tactics –Using the words, CAME FAR” to remember countries that fought with the US during WWII.

Characteristics of Strategic Learners Active learners Think carefully about what they are learning. Understand information better Learn things easier Learn more information Remember better what they have studied.

Actions of a Strategic Learner Set goals and work toward them Ask questions to ensure understanding Change information to make understanding and remembering easier Spend less time studying Use effective strategies for learning and expressing information.

What LINCS IS and What it is NOT? Helps you remember the meaning of a new word Focuses your attention on the parts of the definition you need to remember Uses knowledge you already have to help you learn new knowledge Involves testing yourself to check whether you remember the meaning or not Is not used to memorize a list of items or step in a process Is not used to memorize a passage or poem Is not used when you already know the meaning. Is not used when a different strategy is better for memorizing a particular word.

Step 1: List the Parts List the definition on the back of the card. List the word on the front of a study card.

Step 2: Identify a Reminding Word What are the characteristics of a good Reminding Word?

A good Reminding Word always: Sounds like all or part of the new word Is a real word Has a meaning that you already know Helps you remember what the new word means

Step 3: Note a LINCing Story What are some of the characteristics of a good LINCing story?

A good LINCing Story always: Includes the Reminding Word or some form of the Reminding Word Links the Reminding Word to the meaning of the new word Is short and simple

Step 4: Create a LINCing Picture What are the characteristics of a good LINCing Picture?

A good LINCing Picture always: Has elements that relate to the Reminding Word Has elements that relate to the definition of the new word Helps you remember the new word’s definition

Step 5: Self-test How do I Self-test?

Self-test Say the new word. Say the Reminding Word. Think of the LINCing Story. Think of the LINCing Picture. Say the meaning of the new word. Check to see if you are correct.

What are the benefits of using the LINCS strategy? You’ll be better able to comprehend what you read. You’ll be able to use new vocabulary in class discussions. You’ll be able to use new vocabulary in your writing. You’ll be able to get better grades!
