Chapter 8

Why use 1 st Inversion Chords?  To Improve the contour of the bass line  To provide greater variety of pitches in the bass line  To lessen the weight of V and I chords that do not serve as the goals of Harmonic Motion I- V6/5- I

Inversions in Lead Sheet  Slash Chords: ex. C/E or D7/C

Parallel Sixth Chords  A Series of Parallel First Inversion Chords * Note-it does not mean a bunch of vi chords in a row.  It means that you have a sequence of first inversion chords with the pitches going in the same direction. Ie: V6-IV6- iii6-ii6-I6-viio6  Functions outside of the normal progression rules. Must Be Bracketed!

Part-Writing First Inversion Triads  Contrapuntal Texture: Texture Consisting of relatively independent melodic lines Use the doubling that produces the best voice leading. i.e. Creates the best mountainscape  Homophonic Texture: Chordal Based The doubling should be the one that provides the desired sonority. i.e. Closed vs. open structure  In any Texture: Never double the leading tone= Root of the viio chord
