3 Missions : A religious settlement

4 Pueblo Revolt A fight between the Spanish and Native Americans. The revolt was one of the most successful attempts by Native Americans to drive out European forces.

5 La Salle Expedition French explorer who claimed the Mississippi and lands west of the river as well as its drainage for France. Established Ft. St. Louis Was murdered by his own men

6 San Francisco de los Tejas Mission built in East Texas that ended in failure Created by Alonso de Leon and Father Damian Massanet

7 Francisco Hidalgo Priest who started a mission in East Texas Leader of the Mexican Independence movement towards Spain Believer in the Enlightenment He was arrested then later executed due to his efforts

8 Domingo Ramon – son of Capt. Diego Ramon who led an expedition that allowed Spain to claim/occupy most of the land in East Texas.

9 San Antonio de Valero – The Alamo Mission was established in 1718 Started the first real government of Texas

16 What is the importance of San Antonio? One of the oldest Spanish settlements in Texas and still exists today as a major city. It also had the first form of government in Texas.

17 How did the Chicken War lead to the Aguayo expedition and what were the effects of this expedition? Caused an abandonment of the Spanish missions in Texas

18 What was life like for the Spanish and American Indians in the missions? For the Spanish it was boring unless they were fighting. Native Americans lives included farming, learning the Spanish language, housekeeping and religious classes.

19 Identify some examples of Spanish influence on modern-day Texas? Architecture Food City names Clothing Music

20 How did the Spanish attempt to change American Indian culture? By converting all to Christianity, Spanish rules/laws and customs

21 How did San Antonio’s climate and location help the settlement become successful? It was the midway point between the Rio Grande and the new East Texas The San Antonio River allowed settlers to have access to needed supplies (trade & transportation)

22 How did the war between France and Spain affect Texas? The settling of East Texas came to a stop. Spain increased it defenses in Texas.

23 What buildings were inside a presidio? Towns Arsenals Churches

24 What buildings were inside a mission? Churches Cementaries Gardens Dorms

25 Rather than building missions and presidios, what do the French build in their territories? Military forts

26 Which two Indian tribes were particularly resistant to the Spanish missions? Caddos Comanches
